BILLINGS, Mont. – The Montana State Billings women’s soccer team defeated visiting Northwest Nazarene Thursday afternoon as it evened the season series with the Crusaders earning a 2-1 victory at Yellowjacket Field. The Yellowjackets improved to 7-4-1 overall and 4-2 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action. NNU fell to 3-6-3 overall and 1-4 in conference play.

“I was really happy with the way we played today,” head coach Don Trentham said. “I felt we were in control of the game and when NNU put a goal on us late in the game, the players found a way to win.”

MSUB opened the scoring early in the first half as Kari Foreman tallied her fourth score of the year on a nice cross from Lauren Anderson from just outside the 18 as Foreman headed it into the back of the net off NNU goalkeeper Lauren Delameter.

The game remained 1-0 at half, but the Yellowjackets set the tone and dominated the shots in the first half 11-2. MSUB had a number of scoring chances, but was unable to get anything else across. Delameter had two saves in the opening half as did Yellowjacket goalkeeper Jordan Fenwick.

The second half was more of the same as MSUB continued to dominate play. However, NNU’s Marie Smith scored right in front of the net as she got her foot on the ball getting it past Fenwick in what looked like a rugby scrum. The goal came off a corner kick opportunity for the Crusaders in the 81st minute.

Moments later, MSUB freshman, Jaucelyn Richter, was fouled in the box as the Yellowjackets were awarded a penalty kick. Fellow freshman, Jennifer Larson, took the penalty and converted for the 2-1 lead.

NNU had a couple of looks in the final eight minutes, including a run down the left side as Lacey slipped inside the box and was unable to get a shot off.

For the game, MSUB was led by five shots from Chelsea Libby and Larsen as the team had 17 shots for the game and seven on goal. NNU’s Thompson led the way with two shots on goal as the team had six shots with four on goal. MSUB held a 10-2 lead in corner kicks.

Fenwick ended the game with three saves, while Delameter had five.

The Yellowjackets head to Wendy’s Field Sunday afternoon for the Eighth Annual Rimrock Cup with cross-town rival Rocky Mountain College at 12 p.m. It is the first game of a doubleheader as the men’s teams will play at 2:30 p.m. The Yellowjacket women’s soccer team returns home Oct. 16 versus Carroll College at 4 p.m.
