BILLINGS, Mont. – Three second half goals by visiting Central Washington spoiled Montana State Billings women’s soccer Futbol Frenzy festivities Saturday afternoon at Yellowjacket Field. CWU posted a 3-0 win over MSUB to split the season series.
“Central Washington made their opportunities in the second half,” head coach Don Trentham said. “We had opportunities of our own, but we didn’t convert. When it was 2-0 we pushed people forward and gave up the third goal.”
Playing in her first game of the season, MSUB freshman Emily Holley led the team with four shots and three on goal off the bench. Holley broke her arm just before the season began. Kelsy Villegas scored two of three goals for CWU on three shots with two on goal. She tallied the first goal of the second half and the third and final goal.
Both teams had one shot in the first half as MSUB dominated play for about the first 25 minutes of the first half, but couldn’t get anything past Amber Easterbrook. Each team had two corner kicks in the opening half.
Central Washington (4-6-1, 1-2-1 GNAC) got on the board in the 54th minute as Carson McKole drove from the right end line and centered to Villegas in front of the net for the score. Less than five minutes later, Kaycie Hutchins scored off a 22-yard shot for a 2-0 lead.
The Yellowjackets (6-4-1, 3-2 GNAC) had a number of good looks in the second half, but could not convert. MSUB tallied eight shots with six on goal in the half, but Easterbrook was up to the challenge as she made five saves and one team save. CWU had no saves in the opening half. Holley and freshman Kristen Kastelic each had good looks, but nothing would drop.
Villegas scored the third goal from 15-yards out on the left side in the 75th minute.
For the game, MSUB had nine shots, while CWU had 10. The Yellowjackets had six shots on goal and CWU had five. MSUB won the corners at 4-2.
The Yellowjackets will look to get back on the winning track Thursday versus Northwest Nazarene at 4 p.m. at Yellowjacket Field.
