Yellowjackets Upend Saint Martin’s on the Road, 3-2
Box Score
LACEY, Wash. – Picking up where they left off on Thursday, the Montana State Billings women’s soccer team posted a 3-2 road victory at Saint Martin’s Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Yellowjackets improved to 6-3-1 overall and 3-1 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
“I’m really happy with our team’s performance this week,” head coach Don Trenham said. “In today’s game, we did a great job in three areas – we came out and scored an early goal – we built a 3-0 lead – and we battled the entire 90 minutes to secure a road victory.”
Freshman Jaucelyn Richter continued her impressive freshman campaign as she added to her league-leading goals with two scores against the Saints. Richter scored the first goal just 6:29 into the contest on an assist from Kari Foreman. The second goal came in the second half as she went one-on-one with SMU goalkeeper Ashley Engel for a 2-0 lead at the 59:31 mark. Richter now has nine goals on the year with three assists to lead the team.
Foreman scored the third goal for the Yellowjackets in the 67th minute with assist from Jennifer Larsen and Andrea Baytaluke for a 3-0 lead. Foreman scored, what turned out to be the game winner, on a nice cross from Baytaluke to Larsen and into the left corner for the score. With the goal and assist by Foreman, (third goal and third assist on the year) she has a team-high three game winners including both games this week at Western Oregon and today.
Things got interesting in the 75th and 80th minutes as SMU put together two scoring opportunities as Caley Wiseman scored unassisted from the top of the box in the 75th minute for a 3-1 score. Just over five minutes later, Kayci Donatelli cut the Yellowjacket lead to 3-2 as she scored from 20 yards out to the top corner on an assist from Joanne Packer.
The statistics were pretty even in the match as MSUB held a slim 12-11 lead in shots. Both Richter and Larsen led the team with three shots each. The corner kicks (1) and fouls (7) also were even and MSUB had five saves to four for SMU. Both teams had seven shots on goal.
The Saints, who entered the week ranked 10th in the West Region in the latest NSCAA/adidas poll, were led by Donatelli’s four shots.
MSUB truly has been the “road warriors” this season as it completed a six game road trip today and string of eight of 10 games away from home to begin the year. During the road trip, the Yellowjackets went 4-1-1 and 5-2-1 away from Billings so far.
The Yellowjackets return home to host Central Washington Oct. 3, at 1 p.m., on Futbol Frenzy Day. The women’s game precedes the men’s game versus Northwest Nazarene at 3:30 p.m. at Yellowjacket Field.
This season, ALL MSUB men’s and women’s soccer matches will be FREE on the internet with live video and audio as the voice of the Yellowjackets, Ken Adelblue, will have the call.
