Yellowjacket Women’s Soccer Blank Minnesota-Crookston, 4-0

BISMARCK, ND – Goals were not in short supply for the Montana State Billings women’s soccer team on Sunday as it blanked Minnesota-Crookston in the third game of the University of Mary Tournament. With the win, the Yellowjackets improved to 3-2-1 on the year, while Minnesota-Crookston fell to 2-3-1.
“I was really happy with the way we came out and attacked UM-Crookston from the get go and we were rewarded with a goal six minutes into the game,” head coach Don Trentham said.
Four different Yellowjackets scored goals, while Chelsea Libby had a career-best three assists in the game. MSUB dominated the shots to the tune of 18-3. The Yellowjackets had 11 shots on goal to none for the Golden Eagles.
Six minutes into the game, Kari Foreman scored her first goal of the season as she scored on a rebounded shot and tapped it into the right side of the net with the first assist from Libby. Just over 10 minutes later, Carly Valentine found the back of the net as she took a cross from Libby and tapped it in for the 2-0 lead. It was Valentine’s second career goal and first of the season.
For the third goal of the half, freshman Kristen Kastelic scored her first career goal as she blasted a shot from 30 yards out straight on the goal after two passes from Lauren Anderson and Courtney Harvey for a 3-0 lead.
For the first half, the ‘Jackets had 11 shots to one for UMC and had five corner kicks in the half and 10 for the game.
“Our corners were very effective and we scored three goals off of them,” Trentham added. “Defensively we were organized and held UM-Crookston to three shots.”
Freshman Jennifer Larsen tallied her team-leading fourth goal of the year in the 52nd minute as she headed it past Anna Ogaard for a 4-0 lead. She took passes from Libby and Valentine for the score.
“Heading into conference play, I think we are playing good and still have an opportunity to improve throughout the season,” Trentham said. “Our team would like to dedicate this victory to the Gamberg family and especially Ali.”
The Yellowjackets continue their six-game road swing Thursday at Central Washington at 4 p.m. Pacific time. MSUB returns to Yellowjacket Field Oct. 3, versus Central Washington at 1 p.m.
