Yellowjacket Women’s Soccer Plays to a Draw at University of Mary, 1-1
BISMARCK, ND – Two goals in the first six minutes of the game proved to be all the scoring as the Montana State Billings women’s soccer team tied the University of Mary Saturday morning in the first game of the University of Mary Tournament.
“We did a good job of competing today and played one of our best defensive games of the season,” head coach Don Trentham said. We put ourselves in a position to win, but fell a little short.”
The Yellowjackets (2-2-1) opened the scoring first at the 5:20 mark as freshman Jennifer Larsen hooked up with fellow freshman Jaucelyn Richter for the first goal of the game. Larsen took a shot off a corner kick, gathering the rebound off her own header and put it past Carly Feiler for the early lead. It was Larsen’s third goal of the year to tie Richter for the team lead.
25 seconds later, Mary (1-2-1) got on the board as Alyssa Deutscher took an Amy Tanaka pass on a cross from the left to right side of the net for a 1-1 score.
The Yellowjackets were led by four shots and three on goal by Larsen as the team tallied 12 for the game. The Marauders had 14 shots for the game and Deutscher led the way with five shots and one on goal.
Feiler made six saves for the Marauders while junior Jordan Fenwick had three saves for MSUB as both keepers went the distance.
This is the first tie for MSUB since a 2-2 tie at Western Washington, Sept. 20, 2007.
MSUB will conclude the tournament tomorrow with an 11 a.m. tilt against Minnesota-Crookston. MSUB returns to Yellowjacket Field Oct. 3 versus Central Washington at 1 p.m., on Futbol Frenzy Day.
