BILLINGS, Mont. – The final game of the 2009 MSU Billings Cup Presented by Best Western Clock Tower Inn turned out to be a dandy as Montana State Billings defeated Augustana College 3-2 in double overtime Sunday afternoon at Yellowjacket Field. With the win, the Yellowjackets evened their record at 2-2 on the year, while Augustana fell to 2-2-1.
“I continue to be impressed with the character of this team and was happy to see them battle through two overtimes and find a way to get the result,” head coach Don Trentham said. “I felt both games this weekend we created numerous opportunities with our attack and today we were fortunate to put three past a good Augustana College team.”
The Yellowjackets avenged a 4-0 loss at Augustana last year as MSUB freshman Jaucelyn Richter scored the game-winner at the 107:30 mark. Richter took a cross pass from Chelsea Libby and fired it from about 10-yards out on the right side past Augustana goalkeeper Melissa Fowler. It was Richter’s second goal of the game and third goal of the season as she continued her impressive start to her collegiate career.
Richter got the Yellowjackets on the board in the 24th minute as she took a beautiful two passes from freshman Andrea Baytaluke and Kari Foreman, firing from the right side to the left pole for a 1-0 lead. It was Baytaluke’s first collegiate assist.
The Vikings would have the answer, however. Four minutes later, Katie Shandri scored on a penalty kick for a 1-1 score. It looked as if the momentum was swinging toward the visitors, but with just 21 seconds left in the first half, MSUB’s Kelly Ross scored her first collegiate goal as she cleaned up after a Richter shot. Viking goalkeeper, Amanda Wagner, was unable to handle the Richter shot and Ross was in the right place for the put back and the 2-1 lead.
Just as in the first half, Augustana had the answer just seven minutes into the second half as Jessie Huff scored off a shot from the right side into the left corner for a 2-2 score. The game remained tied the rest of the half, though both teams had some good looks down the stretch.
MSUB came out firing in the overtime periods to the tune of 7-1 in shots, including the game-winner. For the game, MSUB outshot the Vikings 29-13 and 15-8 in shots on goal. Richter led the way for MSUB with nine shots, five on goal, two goals and one assist. Samantha Sandau had six shots and four on goal.
Augustana, a NCAA Tournament team from a year ago, entered this week ranked ninth in the Central Region according to the latest NSCAA/adidas poll. Four players led the way with two shots and Huff, along with Alicia DeHaan, had two shots on goal.
For the tournament, the Yellowjackets finished second with a 1-1 record, while Augustana was third with a 0-1-1 record. Colorado Christian took home the 2009 championship as it went 1-0-1. CCU’s goalkeeper, Liana Signorile, was named the Most Valuable Player as she posted two shutouts in 200 minutes of action and had 16 saves.
MSUB now hits the road for six-straight games and will return to Yellowjacket Field Oct. 3 versus Central Washington at 1 p.m. for the 2009 edition of Futbol Frenzy.
This season ALL MSUB home men’s and women’s soccer games will be FREE on the internet with live video and audio as the voice of the Yellowjackets, Ken Adelblue, will have the call.
