Yellowjackets Fall in Home Opener to Colorado Christian, 1-0

BILLINGS, Mont. – The Montana State Billings women’s soccer team dropped a heartbreaking, 1-0 decision to Colorado Christian Friday afternoon in the first game of the Seventh Annual MSU Billings Cup Presented by Best Western Clock Tower Inn. With the loss, the Yellowjackets fell to 1-2 on the year, while CCU improved to 3-0.
“I felt the players worked hard, created chances and did everything I asked them to do,” head coach Don Trentham said. “Unfortunately it wasn’t enough to get the win.”
Created opportunities the Yellowjackets did as they outshot the Cougars 19-9 for the game and 10-5 in shots on goal. MSUB also had four corner kicks, but was just unable to get anything past CCU goalkeeper Liana Signorlie.
Yellowjacket freshman Jaucelyn Richter led the way with five shots and four on goal. Fellow freshman Kristen Kastelic also had five shots, while freshman Jennifer Larsen had four shots.
Signorlie had 10 saves on the day and recorded her third shutout of the season.
CCU’s Abby Larsen scored the game winner in the 26th minute as she drove up field on a 2-on-2 breakaway and fired a shot at Yellowjacket keeper, Jordan Fenwick, who blocked the shot, but was unable to corral it and Larsen scored on the put back for a 1-0 lead. She led the team with two shots on goal. Kimi Wright had a team-high three shots.
The Yellowjackets’ next outing is scheduled for Sunday at 12 p.m. versus Augustana College in the final game of the MSU Billings Cup. CCU and Augustana meet tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Yellowjacket field.
