Vikings Top Yellowjackets, 85-43

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Montana State Billings Yellowjackets women’s basketball team was unable to overcome an early deficit and a strong attack from the 20th ranked Vikings of Western Washington Thursday night at Sam Carver Gymnasium, 85-43. The loss drops the Yellowjackets to 11-15 on the season and 4-11 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference Play.

The Yellowjackets were led were led by junior Kayla Ryan who scored 15 points and nine rebounds in the loss, while Sarah McNamee dumped in 11 points and three boards. Ryan was 9-of-13 from the free throw line as the Yellowjackets shot 27.3 percent from the field.

“Western Washington shot the ball very effectively,” said head coach Kevin Woodin. “With the injury to Callie Kautzmann tonight in warm-up, it really set us back and limited us off the bench against a very tough and aggressive team.”

The Vikings had five players in double figures, led by Jessica Summers who scored 20 points and 12 rebounds for the only double-double on the night. Amanda Dunbar and Willow Cabe each scored 13 points apiece and combined for six rebounds.

Western Washington shot 45.8 percent from the field and were 43.8 percent from beyond the arc. They shot 80.0 percent from the line and managed to outscore the Jackets 31-4 off of turnovers and 40-18 in the paint.

The Yellowjackets complete the 2009-10 season this Saturday when they travel to Ellensburg, WA to take on the Central Washington Wildcats at 7 p.m. The Wildcats won their first game ever in Billings earlier this season, 83-64, on Jan. 30.
