Wilson’s Second in Javelin Headlines Jackets on Day Two of GNAC Championships

MONMOUTH, Ore. – Nick Wilson finished just 1.45 meters (4-8) behind Western Washington’s Alex Harrison in the javelin event at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships Saturday afternoon in Monmouth. The Montana State Billings track and field teams finished the outdoor season with a seventh place finish on the women’s side and an eighth place finish on the men’s side.
Wilson entered the event as one of the favorites after tossing a season-best and national qualifying mark earlier this season. Harrison just bested Wilson however, breaking the old meet record of 204-1 (62.20 m), with a throw of 208-5 (63.52 m). Wilson had a throw of 203-09 (62.10 m).
Wilson earned the most points for the Jackets on day two as the 4x100 meter relay team of Luke Barrett, Deshawn Lewis, Nathan Diede and Adam Prevost also scored points with a sixth place finish, turning in a time of 44.05.
The Yellowjackets also scored in the 4x400 meter relay when Prevost, Ryan Blomback, Lewis and Tyson Vanderby turned in an eighth place finish with a time of 3:34.03.
The men’s team title was won by Western Washington with a 221 ½ points, defeating Central Washington with 182 points. Alaska Anchorage was third (130), followed by Northwest Nazarene (48), Seattle Pacific (37), Saint Martin’s (15) and MSUB (14).
On the women’s side, MSUB had a pair of sixth place finishes in the relay events to score points. Britney Derhak, Sarah Jackson, Justine Simons and Erika Halle turned in a time of 50.50 in the 4x100 meter relay, while Jackson, Whitney Mickelsen, Halle and Simons finished with a 4:09.92 in the 4x400 meter relay.
Jackson also had a seventh place finish in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:19.56, one of her top times this season. Halle also scored points for the Jackets in the 200 meter finals with an eighth place finish in a time of 26.07. Brook Berg turned in a throw of 39-0 ½ (11.90 m) to take seventh in the shot put for the Jackets.
The Women’s team championship was won by Seattle Pacific, defeating second place Western Washington 224-190. Northwest Nazarene was third with 128 points, followed by Western Oregon (115), Central Washington (69 ½), Alaska Anchorage (68), MSUB (21) and Saint Martin’s (2).
The Outstanding Performers of the meet were Alfred Kangogo of Alaska Anchorage for the men and Crystal Sims of Seattle Pacific for the women.
Nick Wilson qualified for the NCAA Division-II National Championship meet next week, Thursday–Saturday, May 27-29 in the javelin event. The championships are held in Charlotte, N.C. at the Irwin Belk Complex, hosted by Johnson C. Smith University.
