Jackets Continue to Break Marks
SPEARFISH, S.D. – School records continue to fall for the 2010 Montana State Billings track and field team. Three new records were set this past weekend at the Black Hills State Invitational and two athletes qualified in two more events provisionally for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference meet.
Whitney Mickelsen set a new school record in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:54.12, while Mary Owen broke her own record in the steeplechase with time of 12:18.34 and the 4x400 relay team of Mickelsen, Sarah Jackson, Erika Halle and Justine Simons turned in a time of 4:06.35.
Qualifying provisionally for the GNAC meet in a few weeks were field event participants. Nick Wilson qualified in the discus and Kacie Vanderloos qualified in the shot put.
The Yellowjackets also had a number of top-three finishes at the meet, led by a couple of wins. Halle took first in the 100 and 200 meter sprints, while Simons finished second in the 200 meter sprint. Jackson and Mickelsen went one two in the 800 meter run as Owen took second in the steeplechase. Lexi Halvorson won the discus with a toss of 139’-9”.
On the men’s side, Tyson Vanderby took second in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:10.61 and the 4x400 meter relay team of Nathan Diede, Ryan Blomback, Deshawn Lewis and Vanderby finished second.
The Yellowjackets have a week off before heading to Missoula, Mont. for the Tom Gage Classic hosted by the University of Montana on Saturday, May 7. MSUB will then leave for GNAC Outdoor Championships in Monmouth, Ore. on Friday, May 14
