Women’s Tennis Goes 2-1 Over Weekend
LEWISTON, Idaho. – A gutsy performance on Friday against Southern Oregon and a dominant victory on Saturday against College of Idaho, gave the Montana State Billings women’s tennis team a pair of victories as they went 2-1 over the weekend at Lewis-Clark State College.
The Yellowjackets improved to 5-9 on the season, taking their only loss, 9-0, against Lewis-Clark State on Saturday evening.
MSUB led Southern Oregon 2-1 after doubles play on Friday, as Ana Juarez and Lena Macomson defeated Allison Bostrom and Lexi Thomas 8-4 and Kim Karlsson and Rikki Peach teamed up to defeat Addi Morrow and Katrina 8-4.
Juarez, playing in the number one spot, won her singles match in straight sets, (7-6, 7-5), over Bostrom, while Peach defeated Morrow in the third spot, (6-3, 6-2). Macomson sealed the 5-4 victory with her win over Liz Kiger in the fourth position, (6-4, 6-1).
Later in the night, MSUB was unable to get anything going against LCSC, as Juarez and Macomson lost to Katharina Marsela and Ciara Shultz 8-1 in the number one doubles. Peach and Karlsson dropped their match 8-3 to Megan Smedley and Chelsea Gay, while Megin Madruga and Beth Ann Baker dropped an 8-1 decision to Samantha Teigen and Barb Snecker.
In singles play, the Yellowjackets dropped their matches in straight sets, except Peach, who dropped her number three match after taking the first set, (1-6, 6-2, 10-8).
On Saturday, MSUB bounced back to defeat College of Idaho 8-1. MSUB led 3-0 after doubles play then got victories by Juarez (6-0, 6-0), Peach (3-6, 6-2, 10-7), Macomson (6-2, 6-4), Baker (6-2, 6-1) and Shelby Toennis (6-0, 6-4) in singles play. Karlsson dropped a tough match in the four slot, (6-4, 0-6, 11-9).
The Yellowjackets return to the courts this week with five matches scheduled between Thursday, April 1 and Saturday, April 3. MSUB plays New Mexico Military and Colorado College on Thursday in Colorado Springs, Colo.
