Charles Named GNAC Player of the Week Again
BILLINGS, Mont. – For the second time this season, Montana State Billings senior men’s soccer forward, Sam Charles, has been named Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. This is Charles’ second weekly honor of the season as he was tabbed Player of the Week, Aug. 31, and third of the season for the Yellowjackets.
Charles, a native of Chiswell, England, continued his onslaught of the GNAC and school record books this past weekend as he broke his own GNAC record for goals in consecutive games and broke the GNAC record for points in consecutive games.
With three goals in two games this past weekend, Charles eclipsed his previous best with goals in nine consecutive games dating back to last season. In 2007, Charles scored goals in eight consecutive games to break the GNAC record. Charles has tallied at least a point in the past 11 games dating back to last season, breaking the GNAC record of 10 set by set by Pat Doran (Seattle University 2002) and Alex Churskey (Seattle University, 2004).
He leads the team in scoring with 11 goals, three assists and 25 points this season. Charles also leads the conference in shots, shots per game, goals, goals per game, points and points per game. In the latest NCAA statistics rankings, Charles is fifth in the nation in points per game (3.0) and fifth in goals per game (1.33).
The Yellowjackets now begin a stretch of six of the next seven away from home on Thursday at preseason conference favorite Western Washington. MSUB hosts Northwest Nazarene Oct. 3 at 3:30 p.m. on Futbol Frenzy Day at Yellowjacket Field.
This season ALL MSUB home men’s and women’s soccer games will be FREE on the internet with live video and audio as the voice of the Yellowjackets, Ken Adelblue, will have the call.
