BILLINGS, Mont. – For the hot weather yesterday in a double overtime tie with Seattle Pacific, Sunday was a brutally windy day and much cooler day as the wind gusts were near 40 miles per hour which played havoc with Montana State Billings and Jamestown College on the pitch.  MSUB tallied a 3-1 victory over the Jimmies as senior forward Sam Charles set two more GNAC records with a pair of goals.  With the win, the Yellowjackets improved to 5-2-1 on the year, while Jamestown fell to 1-7.

“The conditions for the game today made it very difficult, but we dealt with it well and deserved to win,” head coach Dan McNally said.  “Overall, I am proud of the guy’s effort this weekend.  We played with a high level of intensity and passion for the game and we really look forward to Thursday’s game at Western Washington.”

Charles, continued to rewrite the school and Great Northwest Athletic Conference record books as he has scored in all eight games this season and nine dating back to last year, breaking the GNAC record of eight consecutive games with a goal set by Charles in 2007.  He also has recorded at least one point in all eight games this season and 11 consecutive dating back to 2008, breaking the previous conference record of 10 set by Pat Doran (Seattle University 2002) and Alex Churskey (Seattle University, 2004).

“Sam Charles breaking more GNAC records is a great accomplishment,” McNally said.  “He is having a great season.”

With the gusty and cool conditions, the Yellowjackets had the wind at their backs in the opening half, scoring two goals early on.  Sophomore Garion Holian scored his fourth goal of the year on a 20-yard blast off an assist from Sam Charles just 5:32 into the contest.  Six minutes later, Charles scored on a pair of nice passes from Jarred Weisen and Holian who chipped it to Charles for the score.

The game remained 2-0 at half as MSUB completely dominated the first period.  The Yellowjackets had 15, first half shots to just four for the Jimmies.  MSUB also had seven corner kicks in the opening stanza to just one for JC.

Charles tallied his 11th goal of the year on a nice assist from Chris Andre in the 66th minute for a 3-0 lead.  Andre leads the team with five assists on the year.

Jamestown was awarded a penalty kick in the 76th minute as Roland Makoge converted the kick past MSUB goalkeeper Sander Tollefson for a 3-1 score.  In the second half, with the wind at their backs, the Jimmies started firing shots from all over the field as Tollefson made six, second half saves on seven shots.

For the game, MSUB was led by nine shots and five on goal from Charles to go along with two goals and an assist.  Hollian was second with four shots, three on goal, a score and an assist.  Jamestown was led by six shots and five on goal from Brandon Quinn.  Makoge had the penalty kick goal.

The Yellowjackets dominated every facet of the game as they held a 27-11 lead in shots, 10-3 advantage in corner kicks.  Tollefson, making his first start of the season, recorded eight saves with one goal allowed for MSUB.

With the win, McNally reached the .500 mark for the first time in his career.  He now stands at 38-38-4.  McNally took over a program five years ago that had never had a winning season.   In his first two years, he was 10-24-2.  Since, McNally has gone 28-14-2 with back-to-back winning seasons (2007 and 2008) for the first time in school history.  He led the Yellowjackets to a school-best 13-4-1 record in 2007.

The Yellowjackets return to conference action this week as they travel to Western Washington on Thursday and Saint Martin’s on Saturday, before returning home for Futbol Frenzy on Oct. 3 versus Northwest Nazarene at 3:30 p.m.

This season ALL MSUB men’s and women’s soccer matches will be FREE on the internet with live video and audio as the voice of the Yellowjackets, Ken Adelblue, will have the call.
