BILLINGS, Mont . – Four first half goals propelled the Montana State Billings men’s soccer team to a 6-0 victory over visiting Colorado Christian Friday evening at Yellowjacket Field in both team’s openers. The Yellowjackets dominated the game as five different players scored goals and MSUB outshot CCU 17-5, including 15-2 in shots on goal.

“We played really well in the first half and scored some excellent goals,” head coach Dan McNally said. “In the second half we dominated possession and contained CCU very well. In the end it was a comfortable win.”

Senior forward, Sam Charles, led the way for MSUB with two goals and an assist as he tallied five points on the day bringing him to within three career points of tying Bobby McAlister of Seattle Pacific (2002-2005) for the most career points in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Charles has 90 career points since MSUB has been in the GNAC. He has 106 career points at MSUB, however the GNAC only recognizes records for the years MSUB has been in the league (2007 – present).

Jeremy DeHerrera and Chris Andre added two assists each, while Tyler Moriarty scored his second career goal. Garion Holian, Ross Carmichael and Jarred Weisen each had goals and James Henry tallied his first career assist. The 18 total points in the game is the fifth-most in school history in a game.

The Yellowjackets got on the board quickly in the first half with two goals in the first eight minutes. Charles took a through ball from DeHerrera down the middle of the field and made a nice move past a diving CCU goalkeeper, Jared Jacobs, for an open net score and 1-0 lead.

Holian scored the second goal on a nice run down the middle of the field set up by a great pass from DeHerrera to Charles, who flicked it to Holian for the score and a 2-0 lead.

Charles scored his second goal of the game on a penalty kick in the 24th minute for a 3-0 lead. Moriarty added fourth goal of the half nine minutes later on a chip shot from the right side of the net over the head of Jacobs. Andre had the first assist, for a 4-0 lead.

Defender Ross Carmichael scored his first goal as a Yellowjacket as he was on the receiving end of a corner kick by Andre for the first goal of the second half in the 67th minute and a 5-0 lead. Not four minutes later, the Yellowjackets found the net again as Weisen scored off a rebound and pass in front of the goal from Henry for the 6-0 lead.

MSUB improved to 7-2-1 all-time versus Colorado Christian as 21 players played in the game tonight for the Yellowjackets. Three goalkeepers saw action as starter Matt Mitchell played 69 minutes and had two saves. Sander Tollefson and Daneson Gray combined for the final 20 minutes.

Tonight marked the first time MSUB has opened the regular season at home in school history and is now 7-5-2 all-time in season openers.

The Yellowjackets host University of Great Falls Sunday at 1 p.m., at Yellowjacket Field. This season ALL MSUB home men’s and women’s soccer games will be FREE on the internet with live video and audio as the voice of the Yellowjackets, Ken Adelblue, will have the call.
