BILLINGS, Mont. – 58 combined points from Western Washington’s Derrick Webb and Morris Anderson were too much as the 21st-ranked Vikings downed Montana State Billings Saturday evening at Alterowitz Gymnasium. With the loss the Yellowjackets fell to 9-7 overall and 3-4 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. WWU improved to 19-3 overall and 6-2 in conference play.
The Yellowjackets were led by 21 points from Derrick Wright who went 6 of 12 from the field and 9 of 10 from the charity stripe. DeAndre Chambers tallied 19 points on 6 of 15 from the field and hit a game-high six 3-pointers. DaVell Jackson chipped in 14 points, a game-high eight rebounds and six assists.
Webb led all scorers with 33 points of 12 of 16 from the field and 4 of 7 from deep. He was 5 of 6 from the line with a team-high seven rebound. Anderson tallied 25 points on 8 of 15 from the field. He was 5 of 8 from deep and 4 of 5 from the line with six assists. Zach Bruce and Harold McAllister each had 10 points.
The Vikings shot 59 percent from the field on 36 of 61. They were 12 of 19 from deep and 16 of 20 from the line. The Jackets shot 43.8 percent on 28 of 64. MSUB was 7 of 23 from beyond the arc and 12 of 18 from the line.
The game began as both teams traded buckets during the early going. The first six minutes saw four ties and four lead changes. A triple from Andrew Ready put the Vikings up 14-13 with 14:31 left in the first half. WWU extended the lead to 26-18 using a 12-5 run over the next five minutes. Four free throws by Wright cut the deficit to four at 26-22 with 8:03 remaining, but a triple from Anderson and a jumper from Richard Woodworth swelled the lead to 10 at 33-23 with 6:45 left.
A bucket from Mike McCrary and a 3-pointer from Lasha Parghalava cut the deficit to five points at 35-30 with 5:35 left. The Vikings had the answer once again as Webb scored the final seven points of the half for WWU as it held a 51-38 lead at intermission.
For the half, MSUB improved on its shooting from Thursday as it was 13 of 28 from the field for 46.4 percent. The Jackets were 2 of 6 from deep and 10 of 13 from the line for 76.9 percent. Wright scored 13 points in the opening half on 3 of 5 from the field and 7 of 8 from the line. Parghalava had seven points and DaVell Jackson chipped in six.
For the Vikings, it was the Webb and Anderson show as they combined for 37 of the 51 points. Webb led the way with 21 points on 7 of 9 from the field, 4 of 5 from range and 3 of 4 from the line. Anderson had 16 points on 5 of 8 from the field, 3 of 4 from deep and 3 of 3 from the line. No other Viking had more than five points.
As a team, WWU shot 61.5 percent in the opening half on 16 of 26 from the field. The Vikings knocked down eight triples and were 11 of 13 from the line. The Vikings won the battle of the boards in the first half, 17-10.
WWU opened the second half with a 15-6 run through the first seven minutes and built the lead to as many as 27 points and settled for the 25-point victory.
The Yellowjackets close out the three game home stand Wedneday at 7 p.m. versus Alaska Anchorage at Alterowitz Gymnasium.
