BILLINGS, Mont. – Members of the Montana State Billings men’s and women’s golf team went back to elementary school Tuesday as they read to first graders at Beartooth Elementary School as a part of National Education Week.
“Anytime our program can go out in the community and give back it is great,” head coach Shawn O’Brien said. “Our student-athletes had a good time today and I think our golfers had some good memories of elementary school visiting and reading with the students.”
The MSUB golfers read to a number of different first graders for about 30 minutes and then had the opportunity to have lunch with the students. Following lunch, the students and the golfers went out on the playground for recess where they got to interact.
“Academics and reading are important to our golf team,” O’Brien added. “We want to stress the importance of those by reading to elementary school students.”
National Education Week stresses the importance of reading as there are many different events that happen throughout the week. The golf team, as well as the parents of the students, had the opportunity to come to school and read.
Earlier this year, members of the men’s basketball team went to Washington Elementary School and read to the students there.
