Women’s Golf Finishes Second at Ranger Invitational/RMAC Event #3

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – The Montana State Billings women’s golf team fired a team score of 321 on Tuesday at the Regis University Invitational/RMAC #3 helping the Yellowjackets to a second place finish behind Mesa State.  The ‘Jackets carded a 36-hole team score of 646, edging host Regis by one stroke, while Mesa won its third Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference event of the year with a 620 team score.

“I thought the women played very well shooting our season-low with a 325 Monday and a 321 today,” head coach Shawn O’Brien said.  “It was a total team effort using all five scores.  Kalli Stanhope hit her driver very well today, along with Erin Heaney and Liz Tikriti reading the breaks and putting well.  Amy Nordeen played well showing her leadership capability as our lone senior and captain.  I was glad to see Libby (Rutz) shoot a season-low 79.”

The Mavericks own a three point lead over MSUB in the team standings through three conference tournaments.  The fourth and final conference tournament is scheduled for Apr. 12-13, 2010, at a site to be determined.  The Yellowjackets finished second in the three RMAC tournaments this fall.

Regis was third with a 647 score, followed by Western New Mexico (655) and Adams State (671) to round out the top five.  Nebraska-Kearney was sixth (678), followed by Colorado Christian (682), Colorado State-Pueblo (689) and Chadron State was ninth with a 696 score.

The Mavericks had the top two finishers as Jennifer Hilts fired rounds of 76 and 75 to win with a 151 score.  Teammate Jessica Berve was second as she carded a 75 Tuesday after opening the tournament with an 80.  Lara Pocs of Regis and Kristina Casillas of Mesa State tied for third with a 156 score.

The Yellowjackets were led by Kalli Stanhope who tied for ninth with a 160 score (83 – 77).  Amy Nordeen tied for 11th with a 161 score on rounds of 83 and 78.  Erin Heaney tied for 17th with a 163 score (80 – 83), while Libby Rutz and Liz Tikriti tied for 20th with a 166 score.

This was the final tournament of the fall season for the MSUB women’s golf team.  The Yellowjackets open the spring season at the Warrior Invitational at Lewis-Clark State, Mar. 15-16, 2010.
