Women’s Golf Finishes Third at Rocky Invitational; Tikriti Tied for Fifth, Richter Tied for Sixth

BILLINGS, Mont. – Montana State Billings freshman, Liz Tikriti, headlined a third place finish for the Yellowjackets at the Rocky Mountain College Invitational Monday. Rocky won the tournament with a team score of 934 at the par 71, 5,689-yard Peter Yegen Golf Club. The Yellowjackets finished with a 971 score. Tikriti finished tied for fifth with a 236 score. On the men's side, playing as an individual, MSUB's Chris Richter tied for sixth.
“Liz Tikriti played really well today, I am very proud of the way she played with poise and confidence,” head coach Shawn O’Brien said. “It will be great having a freshman than can contribute.”
Lewis-Clark State finished second with a 953 score, while Carroll College was fourth (1017) and Montana-Western was fifth with a 1086 score to round out the top five.
LCSC’s Cortney Shrout won medalist honors with a 229 score after carding rounds of 77, 73 and 79. She edged Rocky’s, Jen Orchard, by one stroke. Rocky’s Teresa Schlomer finished tied for third with a 233 score with teammate Rachel Hosterman. Tikriti carded rounds of 80, 76 and 80 and finished tied with Carroll’s Emily Slayton with a 236 score.
MSUB’s Kalli Stanhope carded a 239 score (80-76-83), followed by Amy Nordeen with a 243 score on rounds of 82, 82 and 79. Erin Heaney carded a 253 score on an 85, 86 and an 82. Libby Rutz shot an 89 in the first round Sunday, but was disqualified in the second round Sunday. She came back with an 83 on Monday.
Individually, the Yellowjacket women had three players playing and the Yellowjacket men had three as well. Breanna Magness carded a 253 score, while Hannah McPherson shot a 264 and Kate Murdock tallied a 283. On the men’s side, Chris Richter fired a three-under 210 to finish tied for sixth. Aaron Remus shot a 223 and Keithon Walker carded a 239.
The Yellowjacket women return to action Oct. 5-6, at the Regis University Tournament. It is the third of four Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournaments. MSUB currently is second in the standings after two runner-up finishes in the first two RMC tournaments to Mesa State.
“We are looking forward to next weekend playing our third conference tournament,” O’Brien added. “It seems like a lot of our girls are playing well and it always is good when you are playing well going into a big tournament. I thought we played pretty consistent today. Anytime you finish in the top three, you are doing something right and hopefully we will continue that next week.”
Second in the team standings is Lewis Clark State College two strokes behind Rocky with a 628 score. The Yellowjackets are third, followed by Carroll College with a 689 and Montana Western with a 726 score to round out the top five.
Individually, LCSC’s Cortney Shrout leads the way with a 150 score after she carded rounds of 77 and 73 on Sunday. Second is Rocky’s Jen Orchard with a 152 score. She fired a pair of 76s to open the tournament. Rachel Hosterman of Rocky and Heather Bruce of LCSC are tied for third with a 155 score, followed by MSUB’s Kalli Stanhope and Liz Tikriti with a 156 score each and tied for fifth.
MSUB’s Amy Nordeen fired a pair of 82s for a 164 score, while Erin Heaney carded rounds of 85 and 86 to round out the Yellowjacket scoring. Libby Rutz opened the tournament with an 89, but was disqualified in the second round Sunday.
In addition to the five players on the team, MSUB also had three players playing individually. Breanna Magness led the way with a 165 score as she scored an 86 and an impressive 79. Hannah McPherson shot a 178 (90, 88) and Kate Murdock had a 183 on rounds of 94 and 89.
On the men’s side, the Yellowjackets had three players playing individually, too. Chris Richter currently is sixth as he carded rounds of 69 and 71 for a 140 score. Rocky’s Marcus Segerstrom leads the way with a 136 score (69 – 67) and the Battlin’ Bears also lead the 10-team field with a 552 team score.
In addition to Richter, MSUB’s Keithon Walter and Aaron Remus also played in the tournament. Walter carded rounds of 80 and 79 for a 159 score, while Remus shot a 148 as he dropped an impressive 10 strokes from the first round to the second for a 79 and 69, respectively.
The Yellowjacket men’s team is at Western Washington for the Western Washington Invitational which began Monday.
The women’s team returns to action Oct. 5-6 at the Regis Invitational in Denver, Colo. It is the third of four Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournaments. MSUB is second in the team standings behind Mesa State.
