MSUB Women’s Golf Third after First Round of Grizzly Invitational; Stanhope Second

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Fresh of its record-setting performance last weekend in the RMC/MSUB Ryder Cup, the Montana State Billings women’s golf team currently is third after the first round of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference/Adams State Grizzly Invitational.  MSUB sophomore, Kalli Stanhope, sits in second after carding a 76 to open the tournament.

“I am very happy with our performance today,” head coach Shawn O’Brien said.  “We shot very well, but Mesa State was on fire.  I think after a day on the course we will come back tomorrow and shoot some low results.”

Preseason conference favorite, Mesa State, leads the nine-team field in the first of four regular season RMAC Tournaments that will decide the regular season champion in the spring.  The Mavericks shot a team score of 319 on the par 71, 5836-yard Cattails Golf Course hosted by Adams State College.  Each team gets one point in the RMAC Championship Standings for each RMAC team they defeat at the conclusion of each of the four tournaments.

Regis is second at 329, followed by the Yellowjackets at 331, Adams State (333) and Western New Mexico (335) to round out the top five.  Nebraska-Kearney is sixth at 339, followed by Colorado Christian (359), Chadron State (371) and Colorado State-Pueblo (379). 

Individually, Nebraska-Kearney’s Sara Wissing leads the event after shooting a four-over 75.  Stanhope is second with a 76, followed by a tie for third between Kristina Casillas of Mesa State and Lara Pocs of Regis each firing a 77.

MSUB’s Amy Nordeen is tied for eighth with an 82, followed by Libby Rutz (T-20) with an 86.  Erin Heaney (T-23) with an 87 and freshman Liz Tikriti finished her first collegiate round with an 86 and is tied for 26th.

The tournament is scheduled to conclude Tuesday morning beginning at 8:30 a.m.
