Yellowjackets Fourth Entering Final Round of GNAC Championship

COEUR d’ALENE, Idaho – The Montana State Billings men’s golf team sits in fourth place after two rounds of the 2010 Great Northwest Athletic Conference championship on the par 71, 6803-yar Coeur d’Alene Resort and Golf Club course.  The Jackets fired a 36-hole score of 616 and are one stroke out of third behind Northwest Nazarene.  Western Washington leads the four-team field with a 576 score.

Head men’s and women’s coach, Shawn O’Brien, took the women’s team to Phoenix, Ariz., for the women’s Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championship, while Assistant Operations/Media Relations Director, Justin Kesterson, took the men’s team to Coeur d’Alene.

“Overall the guys played pretty well on a very challenging course,” Kesterson said.  “Kyle Armstrong came up big for us today and Chris Richter did an outstanding job in the second round birding four of the final five holes to go 1-under for the round.”

Western Washington leads the field after carding a 36-hole score of 576 and has a 20-stroke lead over second-place Saint Martin’s.  NNU is third with a 315 score.

Individually, the Vikings posted the top three scores Monday.  WWU’s Xavier Dailly leads the 20-player field with a 1-over 142, while teammates Julian Peters and Patrick Boag carded scores of 144 and 145.  WWU’s Sam Ayotte, who carded the low-round 67, sits in a tie for fourth with Saint Martin’s Zach Dietz with a 146.

The Jackets held a three-stroke lead and were in third place after the first round with a 312 score, while NNU shot a 315.  Despite shooting a better second round score (304), NNU carded a 300 second round total to take a one stroke lead.

MSUB’s Chris Richter is eighth after he cut 10 strokes from the first round to the second with a 1-under 70 in the second round and an 8-over 150 for the day.  Kyle Armstrong is 10th with a 152 score (75 – 77), while Jacob Harr is tied for 13th after carding rounds of 79 and 76 for a 155 score.  Both Jeff Allen and Travis Gates are tied for 18th with a 162 score.  Allen fired a 78 and an 84, while Gates shot a pair of 81’s.

“All in all, those guys had big performances for us and put together a strong showing,” Kesterson added.  “The team tomorrow needs to come back tomorrow and put the two rounds behind them and finish off the tournament strong.”
