Yellowjacket Links Complete First Spring Tournament

Complete Results

VALLEJO, Calif. - The Montana State Billings men’s golf team finished the Cal State East Bay Pioneer Shootout in 12th place Tuesday afternoon.  The Yellowjackets fired a 54-hole team score of 1032 on the par 72, 6698-yard Hiddenbrooke Golf Club.

The 12-team field featured NCAA Division I member University of Pennsylvania and Division II ranked teams, No. 18 Dallas Baptist and No. 25 Cal State Stanislaus.

"Our men hung in there all three rounds," MSUB head coach Shawn O'Brien said.  "Once you dig a hole like we did after the first round, it is hard to make a comeback.  I know the men were frustrated with their performance.  However, it is hard for anyone to come out a play well after swinging a golf club for one day outside prior to the tournament.  They have swung indoors this winter, but Sunday was the first day outside for us."

Cal State Monterey won the team title with an 896 score.  Cal State Stanislaus was second with a 904 score, followed by Sonoma State (905), Dallas Baptist (907) and host Cal State East Bay (916) to round out the top five.

Individually, Cal State Stanislaus’ Brandon Taylor earned medalist honors after carding a one-over 217 score.  Cal State East Bay’s Garrett Baxley won a three-hole playoff with Cal State Monterey Bay’s Oskar
Nystrom to finish tied for second at 222.

Inclement weather delayed the tournament’s first two rounds as the final four holes of the second round had to be played this morning followed by the third round.

"The weather on Monday's round was unbelievable with the amount of wind, and some rain," O'Brien said.  "Not one team played well the first round.  I am looking forward to next week when we host our Yellowjacket Invitational.  I strongly believe they will play much better."

The Yellowjackets were led by Jacob Harr who carded a 54-hole score of 250 and tied for 54th.  He carded the team-low round of 76 sandwiched between rounds of 94 and 80.  Travis Gates finished three strokes behind Harr and was 60th, followed by Jeff Allen who was 61st and carded a 254 score.  Chris Richter finished 64th and carded a 275 score.

As a team, the Yellowjackets dropped 65 strokes from the first round to the second (372 to 327) and fired a 333 for the final round.

MSUB returns to action Mar. 18-19 at Eaglerock Golf Club as it hosts the MSUB Yellowjacket Invitational benefitting the Lustgarten Foundation helping fight pancreatic cancer.  Fans can donate money per every birdie the MSUB men’s and women’s golf team makes during the tournament or a general donation.  For more information, please contact Shawn O’Brien at 307-689-3425.
