GNAC PLAYERS-OF-THE-WEEK: Offense - Johnny Spevak, Central Washington (WR, 6-3, 200, Sr., Edgewood, WA – Puyallup) caught eight passes for 71 yards and a pair of touchdowns leading the Wildcats to 37-6 conference home win over Dixie State. Spevak recorded his 50th and 51st career touchdown receptions with catches of five and 14 yards in the second and third quarters, respectively, increasing his career point total to 308. In the process he tied a CWU school record for career pass receptions and set the school record for career pass receiving yards increasing his totals to 283 and 3,907, respectively. Brian Potucek had 283 receptions for 3,889 yards for CWU between 2001 and 2004. Both receivers wore uniform number 84 in their careers and coincidentally have now combined for 84 career TD receptions. Defense – Adam Bighill, Central Washington (LB, 5-10, 218, Jr., Montesano, WA) led the Wildcats in tackles for the second week in a row making 11 stops, including 2 ½ for losses totaling 17 yards. He also had an interception. A year ago, Bighill was CWU’s No. 2 tackler with 78 and tied for the team lead in interceptions with five. He missed Central’s first four games this season, but in the last two contests has had 20 tackles (4 ½ for losses) and has helped lead a defense that has allowed just 389 yards, including minus 62 rushing. Special Teams – Jon Dowd, Western Oregon (WR, 5-11, 205, Sr., Corvallis, OR – Crescent Valley) had 139 all-purpose yards, including 102 on five punt returns, 14 on one kick return and 23 on two receptions. He scored WOU’s first touchdown in a 23-0 win over Southern Oregon on a 49-yard punt return in the first quarter, then set up the first of three Wolf field goals recovering a fumble at the seven-yard line on a Southern Oregon punt return in the second quarter. Dowd leads the GNAC this fall in both punt returns (15.8) and kickoff returns (27.2). His punt return average is on pace to break the GNAC single-season record of 15.0 set by Greg Dykstra of Western Washington in 2002.
OTHER NOTABLE PERFORMANCES: Western Oregon’s defense allowed just 131 yards in a 23-0 shutout of Southern Oregon, its first shutout since blanking Humboldt State 64-0 in 2007. Seventy-two of the 131 yards – and four of the Raiders nine first downs – came on a 12-play first quarter drive which ended on the one-yard line with a Wolf fumble recovery by Gerritt Vincent. . . Bubba Reynolds led Humboldt State with 12 tackles as the Lumberjacks limited Azusa Pacific to 242 yards and a single touchdown in a 31-10 win. The Lumberjacks are allowing 304.8 yards per game, a significant improvement over a year ago when Humboldt gave up 418.7 yards per contest in Rob Smith’s first season as head coach in Arcata.
AROUND THE GNAC: Western Oregon quarterback Josh Riddell needs just 46 yards to become the seventh quarterback in GNAC history to pass for 4,000 yards. He has 4,061 yards in total offense. WOU running back Ben Kuenzi has rushed for 2,200 career yards, including a team-best 242 this season. . . .Spevak needs just one more touchdown to equal the Central Washington career record for touchdowns and set a new school mark for career points. The current records of 52 and 312 were set by running back Dan Murphy between 1996 and 1999. . . .CWU kicker Garrett Rolsma extended his streak of consecutive extra points without a miss to 86 including 20 this season. Rolsma had 13 points Saturday increasing his career total to 277. He needs to average 4.6 points over CWU’s final five regular-season games to join Spevak and Murphy as the only members of the CWU 300-point club.
