GNAC PLAYERS-OF-THE-WEEK:  Jackie Matthisen, Alaska Anchorage (MB, 5-11, So., Anchorage, AK – East Anchorage) had 67 kills, including 50 in 3-2 road wins at Western Washington and Central Washington.  She also contributed 40 digs and 11 blocks.  Matthisen had a career-high 28 kills, the second most in the GNAC  this fall, as the Seawolves ended a 17-match losing streak to Western Washington Thursday.  On Saturday, she had 22 kills including four during a 6-0 run as UAA overcame a 13-9 deficit in the fifth set to beat Central Washington.

OTHER NOTABLE PERFORMANCES: Lindsey Wodrich had 17 kills, 17 digs and four blocks and accounted for 19 points as Seattle Pacific defeated Western Oregon 3-2 to improve to 3-0 and remain the only unbeaten team in GNAC conference matches. . .Megan Thigpen led Alaska Fairbanks with 38 kills and 30 digs, including career highs of 27 kills and 30 digs in a 3-2 loss at Central Washington Thursday.

RECORD BOOK NUMBERS: Erin Norris of Central Washington had 10 aces to increase her career total to 185, three short of the GNAC record held by Alyssa Given of Seattle Pacific (2004-07).  Norris already ranks first in GNAC history in aces per set, averaging 0.61. . .Cammy Dranginis of Northwest Nazarene, who is already the GNAC career block leader with 423, needs just five more blocking assists to tie the conference record of 332 held by NNU’s Erin Hellberg (1998-01).

AROUND THE GNAC:  In addition to Matthisen, Alaska Anchorage was led by McKenzie Moss and Cortney Lundberg with 44 and 38 kills, respectively, on its road trip to Washington and Montana.  Stacie Meisner had 75 digs and seven aces and Calli Scott had 156 assists (11.14 per set) . .Kady Try led Central Washington with 36 kills and 42 digs as the Wildcats split a pair of five-set matches.  Brandie Vea had 53 digs and Bri Gregory had a team-best nine blocks. . .Devon Crotteau had  22 kills and Jody Lutz was credited with seven blocks as Montana State Billings divided a pair of 3-0 decisions. . .Lindsay Grant led Northwest Nazarene with 22 kills and also had 29 digs as the Crusaders earned a road split. . .Danielle Reese had 28 kills and 40 digs and Sylvia Herrold had 27 digs to lead Western Oregon during a 1-1 week. . .Marlayna Geary had 25 kills and Megan Amundson had 22 as Western Washington split with the two Alaska schools. . .Kirstyn Druzianich had 17 kills for Saint Martin’s in 3-0 defeats to NNU and MSUB. . .Amber Johnson was credited with eight blocks as Seattle Pacific outblocked Western Oregon 10-5 and outhit the Wolves .184 to .135 in a five-set win.

WINS AND LOSSES: GNAC teams are 17-9  against PacWest teams (excluding Academy of the Art) and 14-18 against CCAA teams for a 31-27 overall record against other West Region teams.  Matches against Academy of Art do not count as region counters.

GNAC PLAYERS-OF-THE-WEEK:   Taylor Lundquist, Seattle Pacific (D, 5-8, Fr., San Jose, CA – Willow Glen) and Kari Foreman, Montana State Billings (M, 5-5, Jr., Lakewood, CO – Bear Creek). . .Lundquist, who plays the center back position, led the Falcons to a 2-0 win over Central Washington as SPU did not allow a shot on goal in recording its 10th straight shutout.  “Taylor has been phenomenal this season and has been an absolute key to our success,” SPU coach Chuck Sekyra said.  “She was tremendous against Central Washington.  She read the game well, was wonderful in the air, great with the ball and dominated defensively,”. . .Foreman scored MSUB’s game-winning goals in wins over Western Oregon and Saint Martin’s and also  added an assist against the Saints.  Her goal in the 102nd minute snapped a 1-1 tie against the Wolves.  She played all 192 minutes in the two games and all five of her shots were “on goal.”.
OTHER NOTABLE PERFORMANCES: Montana State Billings’ Jaucelyn Richter scored a pair of goals and also had an assist as she extended her string of consecutive games with a point to six.  Richter leads the GNAC in points (21), goals (9) and shots (40) and her game averages of 2.33 points and 1.00 goals are on pace to break the GNAC single-season records.  She has also had two game-winning goals this fall. . .Kelly Irving scored an unassisted goal in the 97th minute and had three of Western Washington’s nine shots on goal in a 1-0 win over Simon Fraser handing the future GNAC member only its second loss in nine contests.  SFU has won six and tied one contest.

RECORD BOOK NUMBERS: Seattle Pacific   has won 20 straight games, three short of its 2007 record for most consecutive victories. The Falcons are also riding a GNAC record 26-game (25-0-1) unbeaten streak and a GNAC-record 37-game home unbeaten streak (35-0-2). .SPU has a team streak of 953 minutes and seven seconds without allowing a goal.  Individually goalkeeper Maddie Dickinson hasn’t allowed a goal in 548 minutes and seven seconds.  That is the seventh longest streak in GNAC history. Jesslyn  Rahm Kellerman has a streak of 416 minutes and 59 seconds without surrendering a goal. 

AROUND THE GNAC:  Jocelyn Charette scored her team-leading fifth goal and also had an assist in Seattle Pacific’s 2-0 home win against Central Washington which was played before a crowd 0f 1,246 at Interbay Stadium.  Charette in the GNAC active career leader in points with 62 and ranks 16th all-time. . .Kendra Courcy scored two of Northwest Nazarene’s four goals in road losses at Saint Martin’s and Western Oregon. . .Kayci Donatelli had a goal and an assist as Saint Martin’s split two home matches.

GNAC PLAYERS-OF-THE-WEEK:  Chris Andre, Montana State Billings (F, 6-0, Jr., Billings, MT) led the Yellowjackets to a pair of one-goal road victories, including a 2-1 overtime win at Western Washington Thursday.   Andre scored a goal in the 106th minute against WWU as MSUB earned its first-ever victory at Bellingham.  He then helped lead the ‘Jackets to a 1-0 win at Saint Martin’s as MSUB grabbed the early lead in the GNAC race.

AROUND THE GNAC: Seattle Pacific extended its unbeaten streak to nine games with a 2-1 road win at Mary, scoring twice in the final 1:23 on goals by Richie Evoy and Alec Nelson.  Nelson’s came on a penalty kick after Evoy was fouled in the box. . .MSUB’s Sam Charles had a pair of assists, including one on Tyler Moriarty’s game-winning goal in Saturday’s 1-0 win at Saint Martin’s. Charles extended his own GNAC career record  for points to 112 and now has recorded a point in a GNAC-record 13 consecutive games.  His GNAC record streak for most consecutive games with a goal ended at nine.  Including one season in the Heartland Conference, Charles has 56 career goals (49 in the GNAC) and 126 career points. . Goalkeeper Matt Mitchell had 11 saves in MSUB’s two wins as the ‘Jackets were outshot 32-12   and surrendered five more corner kicks (8-3). . .Alex Mangeac had assists on both of Northwest Nazarene’s goals in losses at SMU and WWU. . .Austin Kelley had the game-winning goal for the Saints in a 2-1 win over NNU. . .Kellan Brown and Matt Fishbaugher each had a goal and an assist as Western Washington split two home contests.

Cross Country

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: Men – Barak Watson, Northwest Nazarene (Fr., Nampa, ID - Columbia) finished second in the Bob Firman Invitational at Boise in an 8,000 meter time of  25:37.23.  In three races this fall, Watson has a pair of second-place finishes and a fourth.  He also placed second in the open division in the UW Sundodger Invitational Sept. 19 and placed fourth in the Roger Curren Invitational Sept. 12 at Nampa.  Women – Jessica Pixler, Seattle Pacific (Sr., Sammamish, WA - Eastlake)  placed second in the Stanford  Invitational covering the 6,000 meter layout in 20:21 leading her teammates to a 12th-place team finish. Pixler finished just one second behind Tara Erdmann, who was competing unattached. Erdmann placed 78th last year in the NCAA Division I national meet competing for Loyola Marymount.

Men’s Golf
 
PLAYER OF THE WEEK:  Zach Dietz, Saint Martin’s (Jr., Jerome, ID) earned medallist honors in the Saint Martin’s Invitational, carding rounds of 71 and 69 to finish the 36-hole tournament at four-under 140.  It was the first individual win for a SMU golfer since Hiro Nezu won the inaugural GNAC championship in 2008.  Dietz also led SMU to the team title, the first for the Saints in the three-year history of the golf conference.

OTHER NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:  Jeff Allen of Montana State Billings lost in a three-way playoff for medallist honors in leading the Yellowjackets to a second-place team finish in the Carroll College Invitational at Helena, Mont. . .Sam Ayotte of Western Washington (4th) and Justin Lanman and Jack Whealdon of Saint Martin’s (tied for ninth) had Top 10 finishes in the SMU Invitational.

GNAC PLAYERS-OF-THE-WEEK:  Offense -  Adam Wells, Dixie State (RB, 5-9, 203, Jr., Kenmore, WA – Inglemoor) had 124 all-purpose yards and scored two touchdowns to lead the Red Storm to a fourth-quarter comeback win over Humboldt State.  Wells rushed for 38 yards on seven carries and also caught five passes for 86 yards, including touchdown receptions of 13 yards in the opening quarter and five yards in the fourth quarter.  He also had a 42-yard reception to set up a 39-yard field goal by Mike Langston late in the third quarter as Dixie overcame a 17-7 deficit to win 24-20.  Defense –  Buddy Wood, Central Washington (LB, 6-3, 214, Sr., Chattaroy, WA – Riverside) and Wesley Beavers, Dixie State (S, 6-1, 210, Sr., Las Vegas, NV). . .Wood led a Central defense which limited Idaho State to minus 33 yards rushing and 215 in total offense in a 33-22 win.  He had five tackles, including 2 ½ for losses totaling 30 yards.  Wood also forced and recovered fumbles and earned his third career fumble recovery touchdown, two of them in the past two weeks.  The Bengals had just 10 first downs against the CWU defense and had only 148 yards in total offense prior to a 67-yard touchdown pass on their final offensive snap of the contest.  . .Beavers had a pair of fourth-quarter interceptions as Dixie State rallied for a four-point win over Humboldt State.  He returned the first interception 34 yards to the seven-yard line to set up a game-winning one-yard touchdown run by Tauni Vakapuna with 7:24 left in the fourth quarter.  Later he sealed the victory with an interception at the seven, enabling Dixie to run the final 1:26 off the clock.  Special Teams – Kyle Schierholt, Humboldt State (K, 5-10, 200, Sr., Chugiak, AK – Northern State) kicked field goals of 23 and 46 yards to stake the ‘Jacks to a 20-10 fourth-quarter lead.  He also averaged 67.6 yards on five kickoffs without allowing a kick return yard and 40.0 yards on three punts, including a net 34.7.  Schierholt is six of seven on field goals this fall, including a GNAC-best two of three from beyond 40 yards.  His only field goal miss came from 50 and it was blocked.
