GNAC PLAYERS-OF-THE-WEEK:  Calli Scott, Alaska Anchorage (S, 5-8, Sr., Scottsdale, AZ – Pinnacle & Glendale CC) had a GNAC opening weekend best 162 assists (10.12 per set) to lead the Seawolves to a 3-1 record and the team title in the UAA Extended Stay Invitational at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.  Scott, who won the  tournament Most Outstanding Player award for the second year in a row, also had 31 digs, nine blocks and four aces.  “Calli was incredible tonight,” UAA head coach Chris Green said following the Seawolves’ 3-1 win over the Academy of the Art in the championship match. “She does so many things right, along with providing the leadership for a very young team.”  With Scott leading the way, UAA finished the tournament with a .277 hitting percentage, 58 points higher than any other GNAC team in the opening week of the season.

OTHER NOTABLE PERFORMANCES: Devon Crotteau had 67 kills, 33 digs and eight service aces and led Montana State Billings to a 2-2 record, including its first win against Hawaii Pacific in 16 meetings.  Crotteau hit .259 in MSUB’s four matches more than twice the team’s hitting percentage of .124. . .Freshman Marlayna Geary had an auspicious debut averaging 4.00 kills in leading Western Washington to three wins, including a 3-1 win over 20th-ranked Cal State L.A.  Geary had 64 kills in 16 sets and also had 38 digs. . .Megan Thigpen of Alaska Fairbanks took the early kill lead in the conference averaging 4.08 in 12 sets.  Thigpen had 49 kills in four matches, including three against nationally ranked teams.

ALL-TOURNAMENT: Joining Scott on the all-tournament team  at Anchorage were outside hitter McKenzie Moss and middle blocker Jackie Matthisen.  Moss had a team-best 61 kills and 38 digs, while Matthisen, a transfer from Western Oregon, had 50 kills and 34 blocks.  . .Cammy Dranginis of Northwest Nazarene and Erin Norris of Central Washington  were named to the all-tournament team in the Sonoma State Invitational.  Dranginis had 56 kills and a .333 hitting percentage to lead the Crusaders to a 3-1 record.  She also had 13 blocks to move into a tie for second-place on the GNAC all-time block list with 384.  Emily Wofford of Saint Martin’s also had 384 between 2001 and 2004.  Louise Free of NNU (1999-2002) is the all-time leader with 402. . .Norris had a team-best 38 kills and also had 14 aces and six blocks as the Wildcats got off to a 3-0 start before losing to host Sonoma State.  Norris ranks fifth in GNAC history with 155 career aces.

AROUND THE GNAC:   Lindsay Grant averaged a double-double in Northwest Nazarene’s four matches, finishing with 55 kills and 61 digs. . .Sarah Risser had 45 kills and 25 digs to lead Seattle Pacific to a 2-2 record, including a 3-0 win over #18 ranked Cal Poly Pomona.  SPU’s Amber Johnson had 15 blocks in 13 sets to take the early blocking lead in the conference (1.15 per set). . .Danielle Reese was credited with 43 kills as defending GNAC champion Western Oregon won just one of four matches.  The Wolves had a .241 opponent hitting percentage, nearly double the percentage (.125) it posted in leading the conference last fall in that category.

GNAC PLAYERS-OF-THE-WEEK:  Jill Webb, Saint Martin’s (F, 5-6, Jr., Puyallup, WA – Emerald Ridge) tallied five points as the Saints earned a split of two home contests.  She had both of SMU’s goals in a 3-2 loss to San Francisco State, then  had an assist on the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win over Cal State Monterey Bay.

OTHER NOTABLE PERFORMANCES: Jocelyn Charette and Hannah Masson scored the game-winning goals in 1-0 wins over Cal State Monterey Bay and San Francisco State as Seattle Pacific extended its unbeaten streak to 19 games (18-0-1) and its home field unbeaten streak to 32 (30-0-2).  SPU outshot its opponents 47-10 in the two contests.

AROUND THE GNAC:  Marie Smith scored on a penalty kick in the 88th minute as Northwest Nazarene snapped a 15-game winless streak (0-13-2) with a 3-2 win over Eastern Oregon Saturday.  The Crusaders snapped a 13-game losing streak on Thursday by tying Corban 1-1. . .Western Washington (0-1-1), which posted a 17-3-2 record a year ago, is winless after two games for the first time since 2003. . .Seattle Pacific has six 1-0 wins during its 19-game unbeaten streak, including five in its last six games.

GNAC PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK: Sam Charles, Montana State Billings (F, 6-4, Sr., Chiswell, England) scored three goals and also had two assists to lead the Yellowjackets to a pair of lopsided shutout victories.  In three seasons in the GNAC, Charles has scored a GNAC-record 41 goals and 93 points. He broke the old goal record of 40 set by Seattle University's Bobby McAlister between 2002 and 2005 and also tied McAlister's GNAC record for most points.  Including his freshman season in the Heartland Conference, Charles has 48 goals and 109 points.

QUOTABLE:  “It is a great achievement for Sam (Charles) to be the all-time leader in goals scored in the GNAC,” MSUB coach Dan McNally said.  “He has consistently performed at a high level and his goals have been extremely important to our success.  There have been many great forwards in the GNAC (including McAlister, a former NCAA Division II National Player-of-the-Year) and for Sam to have the most goals is a major accomplishment.”

AROUND THE GNAC: Midfielder Jarred Weisen and forward Garion Holian each had two goals and Chris Andre had three assists as MSU Billings opened its  season with two victories.  The ‘Jackets outshot their opponents 34-8. . .Alec Nelson and Tyler Schultz scored goals as Seattle Pacific beat San Francisco State 2-0 in its debut. . .Oscar Jimenez had Western Washington’s lone goal in a 2-1 overtime loss to 17th ranked Sonoma State. . .Renatto Brito had a goal and assist as Northwest Nazarene lost a pair of contests.

Cross Country

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: Women – Theresia Schnurr, UAF (So., Buhlertal, Germany) raced to a pair of victories in duals with Central Washington Thursday and Saturday finishing 23.7 seconds and 18.5 seconds ahead of the field and leading the Nanooks to two dual meet victories.  Men – Manual Santos, Central Washington (Jr., Yakima, WA – Davis)  also earned two wins in Alaska with winning margins of 23.8 and 30.5 seconds.  Clark redshirted last season at CWU after transferring from Clark Community College.

GNAC PLAYERS-OF-THE-WEEK:  Offense -  Judd Thompson, Dixie State (QB, 6-3, 220, Sr., Crystal Lake, Ill. – Prairie Ridge) set a school record (since transitioning from the JC ranks) for passing yards completing 27 of 40 for 374 yards and four touchdowns in a 37-28 win over Adams State.  Thompson, who had 382 yards in total offense, tossed TD passes of 55 and six yards to Kyser Christensen, 22 yards to Skyler Ence and 10 yards to Nash Fowler.  Defense – Buddy Wood, Central Washington (LB, 6-3, 214, Sr., Chattaroy, WA – Riverside) was credited with 10 tackles and also had takeaways on Mesa State’s only two journeys inside the CWU 40-yard line as the Wildcats posted their first shutout in nearly two years.  Wood ended one Mesa drive with a fumble recovery at CWU’s 16 and another with an interception at the Wildcat 24.  Special Teams – Garrett Rolsma, Central Washington (K/P, 6-1, 200, Sr., University Place, WA – Curtis) averaged 40.6 yards on five punts and 67.7 yards on three kickoffs and did not allow a return on either.  He also had a 30-yard field goal to extend a 7-0 lead to 10-0 in the fourth quarter after earlier extending his own streak of consecutive PATs to 67.

OTHER NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:  CWU defensive lineman Marcus Ford had eight tackles, forced a fumble, intercepted a pass and also contributed to a sack as the Wildcats posted their seventh shutout since 2001. . .Johnny Spevak caught eight passes for 133 yards, including a one-handed grab going 68 yards for the game’s only touchdown in Central Washington’s 10-0 victory. . .Kyser Christensen caught nine passes for 215 yards, recording the fourth highest receiving yards total in GNAC history, in Dixie State’s victory.
