Smith Named GNAC Pitcher of the Week
BILLINGS, Mont. – Montana State Billings baseball senior pitcher, Archie Smith, was named Great Northwest Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.
Smith, a native Palmyra, Neb., went 1-0 in two starts for the Yellowjackets in an eight-game road trip at Grand Canyon and Dixie State to open the 2010 season. He allowed just one run and six hits in five innings in a tough 4-2 loss in the season opener at Grand Canyon last Wednesday. Smith left the game with a 2-1 lead as GCU won the game on its last at bat.
He then rebounded with a one run, one-hit, complete game Monday at Dixie State. Smith walked four and fanned five in a 2-1 victory for the Yellowjackets’ first win of the season. For the week, Smith gave up seven hits, walked five and struck out eight in 12 innings.
The Yellowjackets now head to Seaside, Calif., for a pair of non-conference, nine inning games versus Cal State Monterey Bay (2-15) and Sonoma State (7-6) on Wednesday. MSUB and CSUMB start at 11 a.m., while the Yellowjackets and the Seawolves are scheduled for 2 p.m.
