MSUB Women's Soccer Heads on the Road

BRIEFLY
MSUB heads on the road for the first time in 2008 this weekend at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD. MSUB battles Adams State Saturday at 2 p.m., followed by a match with Augustana Sunday at 12 p.m.
JUST FOR KICKS
In 2007, MSUB was 9-10-1 overall and 5-8-1 in its first year in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. This will be the first road test of the 2008 season. The Yellowjackets were 2-7-1 in road games in 2007.
SCOUTING MSUB
The Yellowjackets enter the week with a 2-1 record after hosting the MSUB Cup presented by Best Western Clock Tower Inn last weekend. The Jackets are lead by Kari Foreman who was named Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Week as she scored two goals, including the game winner against Eastern New Mexico and the equalizer against Fort Lewis, last weekend. She leads the team with four shots and three on goal. Amy Remsberg and Melissa Carlson also have scored goals this season and Mandy Ploskonka leads the team with two assists.
In goal, the Jackets are led by Jordan Fenwick who has played all 278:20 thus far. She has a 2-1 record, 18 saves and one shutout. Fenwick carries a 1.62 goals against average.
RECAPPING LAST WEEK
The Yellowjackets opened the 2008 campaign with a 2-1 record and a second place finish at the Sixth Annual MSUB Cup presented by Best Western ClockTower Inn. MSUB dropped the opener 4-0 to Dixie State, but rebounded for a hard-fought, come-from-behind overtime victory over Fort Lewis and posted a 3-0 shutout of Eastern New Mexico. The Jackets scored five goals and had four assists. MSUB also had an own goal with won the game against Fort Lewis in overtime.
SCOUTING ADAMS STATE
The Grizzlies enter the weekend with a 1-3 record after a 3-0 loss to Augustana Friday afternoon. Adams State has given up nine goals in its last three games after beginning the season with a 3-2 victory over Wayne State (Neb.) Leading the way for Adams State this season is Amber Drumm who has two goals, 15 shots, six on goal, one game winner and is 1-1 in penalty kicks. Kayla Hatfield and Cori Rich each have a goal for the Grizzlies.
In goal, Adams State is led by Kirsten Dorsey who has a 1-3 record with 40 saves and a 2.90 goals against average. She has allowed nine of the 11 goals against this season. Also seeing action is Jasmine Burt who has allowed two goals in just over 80 minutes.
The Yellowjackets have a 2-0 record versus Adams State. The Jackets and the Grizzlies played Aug. 23, 2007, with MSUB coming away with a 3-1 victory in the season opener. Mandy Ploskonka, Brittney Sandau and Amy Stephens each had goals for the Yellowjackets. MSUB won a 4-0 decision in Billings in 2005 over Adams State and has outscored the Grizzlies 7-1 in the two meetings.
SCOUTING AUGUSTANA
Augustana is 1-1-1 after a 3-0 victory over Adams State Friday afternoon in the first game of the Augustana Tournament. The Vikings are led by Katie Shandri who has scored two goals and an assist this season along with a game winner. Lisa Shirk and Raelyn Walczak each have a goal and Shirk leads the team with two assists.
In goal, the Vikings have split duties thus far this season. Both Lisa Jarovski and Mikhaila Baltes have played in all three games with with Baltes giving up two scores and Jarovski allowing one.
MSUB and Augustana have never met in women’s soccer.
OWN GOAL MANIA
Both the men’s and women’s soccer teams won games in overtime on own goals last weekend. The men defeated Dixie State in the season opener 4-3 in double overtime on an own goal last Friday. The very next day, the women came from behind and won on an own goal, 2-1 in overtime over Fort Lewis.
FOREMAN NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Kari Foreman was named GNAC co-Player of the Week after her two goals this past weekend. She scored the game winner against Eastern New Mexico in a 3-0 victory and scored the equalizing goal against Fort Lewis as the Jackets went on for a 2-1 overtime victory.
JACKETS SELECTED THIRD
MSUB has been selected third in the GNAC preseason poll by the league coaches. Defending conference champion and 2007 NCAA Final Four Seattle Pacific was selected first, followed by Western Washington, MSUB, Central Washington, Northwest Nazarene and Western Oregon tied for fifth and Saint Martin’s was picked seventh.
MSUB SIGNS EIGHT
The Montana State Billings women’s soccer program signed eight players during the offseason to go along with 16 returners. All eight incoming players will have the opportunity to make an immediate impact.
MSUB SOCCER FIELD WINS AWARD
The newly renovated MSUB Soccer Field won a NCAA Community Engagement Award as the top community relations effort submitted from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. MSUB was one of 22 schools to receive the award and also received a $500 grant from the NCAA to be used in future community-engagement efforts.
