Yellowjackets Ninth After First Round of NCAA Super Regional

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Montana State Billings women’s golf team is in ninth place after the first round of the 2009 NCAA Super Regional at the Westward Ho Country Club, hosted by Augustana College.  The Yellowjackets fired a team score of 352 on the par 72, 6,010-yard course.  Round two is scheduled to begin Tuesday at 8 a.m. Central time.

“Playing conditions were tough today as it was very windy as the day progressed,” head coach Kevin Woodin said.  “This is a great experience for our players and we hope to improve tomorrow and I think we will.  I thought Kalli’s (Stanhope) score was very good especially with the gusty conditions.  In general, our players had a lot of good holes and we look forward to tomorrow.”

Upper Iowa and Concordia-St. Paul (Minn.) are tied after the first 18 holes with a 313 score, followed by Augustana (327), Minnesota State-Mankato (329), Fort Hays State (332), Mesa State (336), Southwest Minnesota (342), Winona State (Minn.) 350 and the Yellowjackets at 352.

MSUB’s Kalli Stanhope is tied for fifth after carding an opening round, seven-over 79.  Upper Iowa’s Rochelle Schmidt leads the way with a three-under 69, followed by Anne Martin and Jacquelyn Hauser of Concordia-St. Paul with scores of 72 and 74, respectively.  Minnesota State’s Leah Grozdanich is fourth with a 78.  Six players are tied for fifth, including Stanhope.

Rounding out the other four scores for the Yellowjackets after the first 18 holes saw Lindsay Erickson tie for 35th with an 89, followed by Amy Nordeen (T-39) one stroke back at 90.  Libby Rutz and Erin Heaney are 46 and 47th, respectively, after carding rounds of 94 and 95.

The top three teams after the 54-hole Super Regional and the top three individuals on non-qualifying teams advance to the NCAA Division II Championships, scheduled for May 13-16 in Findlay, Ohio.

The Yellowjackets are scheduled to tee off tomorrow between 8:15 and 8:55 a.m.  Fans can access live stats by logging on to www.goaugie.com/sports/2009/4/29/NCAAWGREGIONAL.aspx?id=1748.
