Yellowjackets Finish Second at Maverick Invitational; Set School Record

Results in PDF Format

Grand Junction, Colo. – The Montana State Billings women’s golf team continued its impressive start to the season with a runner-up finish at the Maverick Invitational, hosted by Mesa State Tuesday.  Fort Hayes State won the tournament as the Yellowjackets moved from fourth after the first round to second for the final.

"I was thrilled with today's performance from my entire team,” head coach Kevin Woodin said.  “Our team talked last night and we felt like we definitely could improve our position from day one.  However, posting 320 was even better than I imagined.  It is a great score and to have all five underclassman shoot 86 or better with three of them in the 70's is very exciting.  I am very proud of their performance today."

The Yellowjackets had a number of personal bests and set the school record for the lowest team score for a round in school history.  Tuesday, the Jackets shot a 320 (best round of the entire field) which topped the previous school record of 325.

Fort Hayes State fired a 36-hole score of 655, followed by MSUB’s 665 (345 – 320), Western New Mexico was third with a 666, followed by host Mesa State (668) and Nebraska-Kearney (679) rounded out the top five.

Fort Hayes’ Kiley Johnson took medalist honors after a 159 (80 – 79) while MSUB’s Kalli Stanhope finished third after shooting a 79 on Tuesday for a 162 total. Amy Nordeen finished tied for sixth after she carded a personal best 77 Tuesday.  She also knocked 10 strokes off from Monday to Tuesday to tie for the second best round score in the tournament.  In addition to Nordeen, Lindsay Erickson shot a 79 which also was a career best and she finished tied for 13th after being 25th after the first round.  Erin Heaney also moved up as she finished tied for 22nd with an 85.  Libby Rutz also had a personal best with an 86 to finish tied for 26th.

The Yellowjackets now have a first place finish and a second place finish to begin the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference fall season.  MSUB now returns home for the Rocky Mountain Invitational, Sept. 28-29 at Peter Yegen Golf Club.

  1. Montana State Billings 345 – 320 = 665
