Yellowjackets Improve on Second Day of Grand Canyon Women’s Invitational

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The Montana State Billings women’s golf team improved by 20 strokes as a team and finished 17th at the Grand Canyon Women’s Invitational Tuesday with a 680 team score. Cal State Monterey Bay won the event with a 608 score.
“I am pleased with our play especially since we have had a hard time getting out on the course due to weather," head coach Kevin Woodin said. "Our players improved throughout the tournament and I am optimistic we will continue to improve. We are looking forward to the RMAC championship later this month.”
Sonoma State finished second as a team with a 624 score, nipping St. Edward’s by a stroke and Tarleton State by two strokes. Chico State finished fifth (628) edging St. Martin’s by two strokes and Western Washington finished eighth at 634.
Individually, Sonoma State’s Brittany Carrera took home medalist honors, edging CSUMB’s Darcy Lake by one stroke with a 3-over 147. CSUMB’s Cicilia Chudivan finished third (149) while teammate Etivise Latu, who tied for the lead yesterday with a 73, fired an 81 and finished tied for ninth.
For the Yellowjackets, freshman Kalli Stanhope took 13 strokes off her score from yesterday and fired a 75 for a 163 36-hole score (88-75). She finished tied for 50th. Amy Nordeen fired an 81 for a 166 score and she tied for 61st. Lindsey Erickson shot an 88 and finished tied for 74th with a 174 score, while Libby Rutz dropped five strokes from yesterday and shot an 86 for a 177 score and a 79th place finish. Erin Heaney dropped six strokes as well, carding a 92 for 87th and a 190 score.
The Yellowjackets return home and will prepare for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championships, Apr. 18-19 in Buckeye, Ariz.
