COACH WOODIN’S COMMENTS:  “We are back on the road this week.  Saint Martin’s has been playing really well lately.  We would like to turn the tables on Western Oregon and beat them at their place.”

LAST WEEK:  The crowd had the foundations for Alterowitz Gym shaking on Saturday, Feb. 9.  NCAA Division II No. 1 Alaska Anchorage came away with a 56-55 win over the Yellowjackets.  With 9:30 left in the game, the Jackets had the Seawolves down 12.  UAA mounted a slow but steady comback.

Down three with 20 seconds left, MSUB missed a shot.  Alaska Anchorage grabbed the rebound but Kayla Ryan stole the ball and scored to make it 56-55.  UAA missed a free throw and MSUB came down for one last chance.  Its shot fell short as the buzzer sounded.

For the Yellowjackets, Alira Carpenter had 17 points and two steals, Jen Smith had 12 points and 10 rebounds and Shantell Marquis had 12 points, seven assists, four steals and blocked four shots.

QUEST FOR #1:  Alira Carpenter already has four career records under her belt and is looking at a fifth.  On December 18 against Chaminade, she nailed a three-pointer to become the all-time leading scorer.  Carpenter currently has 1858 points and needs 26 more to score more points than any player in MSUB history, male or female. She also hold the records for three-pointers made (270) and attempted (662) and field goals attempted (1523).  Carpenter is second in field goals made with 654 and needs 27 to break that record.

THE 400 CLUB:  Welcome Jen Smith to the 400 club.  No it is not any kind of social group.  On December 15 against Hawaii Pacific, Smith became the 21st player in school history to record 400 career rebounds.  She needs 15 rebounds to become the 18th player to have 500 rebounds.

RANK IT UP:  Montana State Billings is ranked among the top 15 in four catergories for NCAA Division II (Feb. 2, 2009).  Shantelle Marquis is fifth in assists with 6.53 per game.  Alira Carpenter is in seventh for scoring with 23 per game.  Carpenter is also 13th in free throw percentage at 89.5%.  As a the team the Jackets are 10th in assists with 18.20 per game.

GNAC POLL:  Montana State Billings received 37 points to place sixth in the GNAC Pre-Season Poll.  Complete poll is below.
1.    Alaska Anchorage (8)                                86
2.    Seattle Pacific (1)                                       67
3.    Northwest Nazarene                                  65
4.    Western Washington                                  55
5.    Saint Martin’s                                             40
6.    Montana State Billings                              37
7.    Central Washington                                   28
8.    Western Oregon                                          22
9.    Alaska Fairbanks   17

80 IS GOOD:  Montana State Billings does not fear 80.  In fact, we embrace it.  In the history of women’s basketball, 101 times the Yellowjackets have scored 80+ points at home and have never lost.  Yes you heard me correctly.  MSUB is 101-0 when scoring at least 80 points in Alterowitz Gym.

COUNTDOWN TO 100:  Kevin Woodin is on track to becoming the third coach in school history to win 100 games.  He is currently the third winningest coach in terms of victories with 83.  Woodin trails Frank McCarthy (191) and Ted Anderson (102).

LITTLE MISS CHARITY:  We’ll just call Alira Carpenter, Little Miss Charity.  She is 102-of-114 from the line this season and has hit 43 of her last 46 attempts.  Against Mary on Nov. 29, she tied the school and GNAC record by making 16 free throws.

600:  On December 6, 2008, Montana State Billings hung on for a 65-61 win Metro State in Alterowitz Gym.  It was the 600th career win for the the Yellowjackets.

NO LOVE FOR COLORADO:  The last time a team from Colorado beat MSUB at home?  Let’s say George Bush was President of the U.S.  Senior that is.  On Feb. 24, 1990, Denver beat the Jackets 66-65.  Since then, the Yellowjackets have won nine straight games against Colorado opponents.

THIS WEEK IN MSUB HISTORY:
Feb. 11, 1978 - Montana State Billings comes from behind to beat MSU-Northern 62-59.  Deb Prevost scores 24 points including the last eight of the game.  She sets a school record by hitting 14 free throws.

Feb. 13, 1976 - Montana State Billings flies past Black Hills State 106-52.  That set the school record for points in a game and it still remains the record.

Feb. 16, 1979 - Montana State Billings blows past MSU-Northern 90-58.  Grace Garbofsky and Gayle Jabs become the first and only female players at a Montana college to have 20+ rebounds in the same game.  Grabofsky set the school record with 26 while Jabs collected 21.

Feb. 16, 1990 - Montana State Billings beat MSU-Northern 65-62 on the road.  Shelley Altrogge drops in 40 points to become the first female player in school history to score 40 or more points.
