Montana State Billings Rolls over the Battlin’ Bears

BILLINGS, Mont. – Montana State Billings pulled away in the second half, Tuesday night to beat Rocky Mountain 92-62. It was the final exhibition game of the season for the Yellowjackets. MSUB opens the regular season, Saturday, Nov. 15, home against Colorado State Pueblo. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
For the first 15 minutes, Montana State Billings and Rocky Mountain slugged away at each other. Neither team was able to gain significant ground. Up 25-18 at the 5:17 mark, MSUB scored nine straight points to go up 34-18 with 4:02 to go.
The Battlin’ Bears refused to quit and outscored the Yellowjackets 15 to 5 the rest of the way. Janie Rayback scored as the buzzer sounded to make it 39-33, MSUB at the half.
In the second half, the teams traded buckets in the first minute. After a lay-up by Josie Evans at the 18:59 mark, the Jackets went on a tear. MSUB put on a 34-5 run over the next 10 minutes to put the game out of reach.
“It was a solid team performance tonight, “ said head coach Kevin Woodin. “Rocky did a nice job with their zone defense and had us out of sync in the first half. We came out in the second half with a lot of energy. Our players did a good job of adjusting to their defense which in turn allowed us to get better looks. Jen Smith and Kayla Ryan played very well tonight. Liz Lewis (RMC) is a good player but Jetton Meadors made her work for everything. Kayla McPherson hit a couple of big three’s for us. We are looking forward to starting the season this weekend against CSU-Pueblo.”
For MSUB, Alira Carpenter had 20 points with three triples, Smith had 15 points, nine boards and hit three three-pointers and Ryan had 15 points. McPherson scored 11 points off the bench.
For RMC, Shaylynn Conroy had 19 points and four triples, Lewis scored 14 with seven assists and three steals and Rayback had 13 points.
