Yellowjackets Fall on First Day of NCAA West Region

ARCATA, Calif.- The bats of Montana State Billings (39-16) fell silent in a 5-0 loss to Cal State Stanislaus (31-18) Friday afternoon. The Yellowjackets were held to just three hits in the NCAA West Region Softball opener. MSUB will face Humboldt State, Saturday, May 9 in an elimination game at 1:30 p.m.
Cal State Stanislaus used four walks in the first inning. In the third inning, Ashlee Genseal drew a walk. Jennifer Arnold then hit a two run shot over the center field fence to make it 3-0. The Warriors would score twice in the sixth inning to seal the game.
For MSUB, Shay Oberg had a double while Dawn Norcross and Steph Gosselin each had a single. Lisa Moore (11-4) gave up five hits, five runs, three of them earned, walked seven and struck out three batters.
For CSUS, Alyssa Guzman and Nikky Rissetto had two hits each. Jessica Gaumnitz (17-7) threw a three hitter with one walk and struck out nine batters. She had a no hitter for four and one-third innings before Dawn Norcross singled to right field to break it up.
“It was the first game of postseason, and we put too much pressure on ourselves,” MSU Billings head coach Anthony Stone said. “We didn’t handle adversity very well today and this wasn’t a typical offensive day for us. We’ll have to make adjustments tomorrow and hope for the best.”
