MSUB Men’s Soccer Tabbed Best Academically
in the GNAC; Jackets Fourth Overall
BILLINGS, Mont. – In its first year in the
Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC), the Montana State
Billings Yellowjacket athletic program shined not only on the
field of play, but in the classroom, too. Thursday, the
conference office announced the 2007-08 Great Northwest Athletic
Conference Academic All-Sports titles. MSUB finished
fourth overall and the men’s soccer program garnered the top
grade-point average in the conference in that sport.
The Yellowjacket men’s soccer team posted a
3.36 GPA which is better than any of the previous winners since
the awards begin in 2001-02. MSUB is just the third team
to win the award in men’s soccer as well. Seattle Pacific
won four of the first five awards, followed by Seattle
University winning last year with a 3.31 GPA.
As a department, the Yellowjackets nipped
Saint Martin’s, 111-110, for fourth-place in the standings.
Northwest Nazarene took top honors for the first time,
dethroning previous champions, Seattle Pacific and Seattle
University. The Crusaders won both the men’s sports title
and women’s title. The Yellowjackets finished fourth as
well in the women’s sports with 70 points.
Sixty-five of the conference’s 96 teams (67.7
percent) posted cumulative GPAs of 3.00 or better, including all
10 women’s cross country teams, all nine women’s track and field
teams and all eight women’s soccer teams. Nine of the
GNAC’s 10 volleyball teams also had team GPAs of 3.00 or better.
47 of the GNAC’s 54 women’s teams (87 percent) had GPAs of 3.00
or better.
The Academic all-sports standings are based
