Jackets Fall at No. 7 Fort Lewis, 2-1
Box Score
DURANGO, Colo. – Montana State Billings’ upset bid of No. 7 Fort Lewis fell just short Tuesday afternoon, as Fort Lewis escaped with a 2-1 victory over the visiting Yellowjackets. With the loss, MSUB falls to 4-4 on the year, while Fort Lewis improves to 4-1-1.
“I am very proud of my team,” head coach Dan McNally said. “We have experienced some difficult situations this season, but I believe our strong character will see us through in the end.”
The Skyhawks jumped on the board first as Evan Purcell scored off a Sam Morris corner kick for a 1-0 lead just 1:40 into the contest. Moments later, (2:24) Scott Dixon and Sam Charles hooked up for their second goal and assist in as many games. Dixon crossed a long pass from midfield to Charles who kicked it over the goalie for the equalizer. It was Charles’ ninth goal of the season and third assist for Dixon.
For that much excitement in the first few minutes, the game remained 1-1 through the first half. Fort Lewis led in shots in the opening half, 11-2 and held a 4-0 lead on corner kicks.
Purcell found the back of the net in the 64th minute for the game winner as Kyle Wood had a short pass to the right front side of the goal and Purcell hit to the far low post for the score.
The Jackets fought valiantly, but were unable to come up with the equalizer again, falling 2-1. In MSUB’s four losses this season, all have been by one goal.
MSUB returns home to face Jamestown Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at the MSUB Soccer Field.
