Men’s Golf Shoots Low-Round in GNAC Championship

COEUR d’ALENE, Idaho – The Montana State Billings men’s golf team shot the low-round for the tournament and dropped 19 strokes from its first round score to its second at the 2009 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championship Monday.  The Yellowjackets have a 36-hole score of 593 heading into tomorrow’s final round.

The Yellowjackets opened the tournament with a 306 and followed up with a tournament-best, three-over 287 in the second round and are 11 shots back of leader Saint Martin’s.

Western Washington is in second with a 585, 36-hole score on the par 71, 6,803-yard Coeur d’Alene Resort Golf Club.  Northwest Nazarene is fourth with a 621 score.

MSUB and NNU were tied for third after the first round.  That’s when the Yellowjackets caught fire as no Yellowjacket shot worse than four-over in the second round.  Jeff Allen tied Western Washington’s Jake Koppenberg for the low-round of the tournament with a two-under 69. 

Jacob Harr leads the way for MSUB with a six-over 148 (76 – 72).  Travis Gates, Allen and Jeff Dalton all are tied for ninth with a seven-over 149.  Mike Watson is 14th with a 153.

Koppenberg leads the tournament individually with a three-under 139.  SMU’s John Eisentrout is second with one-under 141, while WWU’s Brandon Brow is third with a 144.

The final round is scheduled to begin tomorrow at 8 a.m.
