BILLINGS, Mont. – After posting a 9-3 record during spring break and a sweep of Northwest Nazarene on the road, the Montana State Billings baseball team took home some weekly hardware as Stefan Malkuch and Steve Scott were named Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, the conference office announced Monday.
Malkuch, a native of Kalispell, Mont., went 9 for 22 for the week to lead the team with a .409 average. He had three doubles and a three-run home run in a 4-1 win over Northwest Nazarene. Malkuch had eight RBI and 15 total bases, while slugging .682 and had an on-base percentage of .480. He also had two steals and converted all eight of his fielding opportunities.
Scott, a Billings native, earned Pitcher of the Week honors for the third time in his career and first time this season. Scott went 2-0 for the week with a remarkable 0.75 ERA including one complete game. He pitched 12 innings, allowing four hits, two runs – one earned, two walks and he struck out 10. Scott carried a no-hitter through five innings and combined with Brian Howe for a two-hitter in a 13-1 win over the University of Mary, Mar. 2 in Phoenix, Ariz.
Brian Dukart earned conference co-Player of the Week honors earlier this season for his efforts as MSUB won three of four games at Grand Canyon last week.
The Yellowjackets, who are leading the GNAC with a 4-0 mark and are 10-10 overall, travel to Central Washington this weekend for a four game series Friday and Saturday. MSUB opens the home season, Mar. 31, with a doubleheader versus Colorado Christian, beginning at 3 p.m.
