Lady Jackets Fall at Saint Martin’s, 73-45

   MSUB Season Stats

LACEY, Wash. – A win for the Montana State Billings women’s basketball team was not in the cards Thursday night as the Lady Jackets stumbled against the Saints 73-45 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action.  The loss drops the Jackets to 9-15 overall and 6-9 in league play, while Saint Martin’s University, currently ranked eighth in the West Region, improve to 16-8, and 9-6.

The Saints built a 15-point lead by the halfway mark of the contest and kicked into cruise control for the final 20 minutes as SMU led the contest wire-to-wire.

Freshman Kayla Ryan (Big Timber) carried the Lady Jackets recording a double-double of 14 points and a career-high 14 rebounds.  Ryan was 5-of-7 from the floor and 4-of-7 from the free throw line. Shantell Marquis (Cascade) was the only other Yellowjacket to average double figures, posting 10 points.  Alira Carpenter (Lewistown) who has averaged 20.3 points per game this season was held to just eight points.

The Yellowjackets were a cold 30 percent from the field and connected on just 3-of-23 from long range for 13 percent.  Struggling at the free throw line, the usual hot-shooting Jackets were 10-of-16 for 63 percent.  The Lady Jackets outrebounded the Saints 44-40 but committed 23 turnovers to the Saints’ eight.

Four Saints scored in double figures and were led by Sade Smith’s 14 points and nine boards.  Smith snatched a game-high five steals.  Jamey Gelhar netted 12 points with teammates Michelle Short and Roni Jo Mielke chipping in 10 points apiece.

Saint Martin’s shot 39 percent from the field and 42 percent from the perimeter draining 8-of-19 attempts.  The Saints’ bench combined for 23 points with the team grabbing 19 steals.

The Lady Yellowjackets wrap up their final road trip of the season with a contest against Western Oregon University on Saturday, March 1 in Monmouth, Ore.  Tip off is scheduled for 5 p.m., PST.  MSUB closes out their season at home March 6 and 8.
