Seven Yellowjackets Named to GNAC All-Conference Softball Team

SPOKANE, Wash. – Seven Montana State Billings softball players were named to the 2008 All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference team, the conference announced Monday afternoon. Junior Leslie Davis and senior Jessica Frank were named to the first team, while senior Jenna Haacke, juniors Lisa Moore, Terina Stacks and freshman Kelly Parsons were named to the second team. Parsons also was named Freshman of the Year and junior Stephanie Gosselin was named to the honorable mention team.

“Landing seven student-athletes on the all-conference team our first year in the GNAC really says a lot about how hard these kids worked this season,” head coach Tony Stone said. “All of them are very deserving of such an honor, especially going through as many coaches as they have had over the past three or four years. I am so proud of them who have achieved so much this season.”

Besides Parsons winning Freshman of the Year, Mallory Holtman of Central Washington was tabbed Player of the Year. Pitcher of the Year was split between Erin Martin of Seattle and Katie Fleer of Western Oregon. Fleer also won Newcomer of the Year and WOU head coach Pam Knox won Coach of the Year as the Wolves earned the GNAC’s automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament beginning this week to round out the specialty awards.

The Yellowjackets had the most selections in on the first two teams with six. Seattle and Western Oregon each had five on the first two teams. Seattle had the most overall including the honorable mention team with nine, followed by Western Oregon with eight and MSUB with seven.
Frank and Davis were key power hitters for the Yellowjackets this season. Frank led the team with 10 home runs, RBIs with 34, total bases with 101 and slugging percentage at a .635 clip. Frank also led the team in steals going 18 for 19 on the year. Davis belted a team-high 15 doubles and was one of three players to play and start in all 49 games. Davis tied for the team lead with 57 hits and was second in slugging percentage at .614.

Moore had a very impressive junior campaign in the circle for the Yellowjackets. She led the team with a 2.40 ERA, a 12-5 record in 23 appearances, 16 starts and 12 complete games. She had three shutouts and one save in 116 innings pitched. Opponents hit just .252 off of her this season.

Stacks, Parsons and Haacke made the Yellowjacket lineup a force to be reckoned with this season both offensively and defensively. Stacks was third on the team in average at .373 and tied for the team-lead in hits with 57. She also had an outstanding season with her glove as she committed just three errors in 328 attempts for a team-best .991 fielding percentage. Stacks also played and started all 49 games. Haacke finished her senior year with a .383 average which was good for second on the team. She had 46 hits, eight doubles, one triple, one home run and 19 RBIs. Gosselin, who led the team with a .408 average in 46 games, was named to the honorable mention team. She was fourth on the team in hits with 53, second in doubles with 10 and slugged .600 for the year.

Parsons, who also was named Freshman of the Year, had an outstanding first year for the Yellowjackets. She was behind the dish for all 49 games and hit .341 for the year. She had 45 hits, eight doubles and was second in home runs with nine. In addition, she tied for the team-lead with 34 RBIs and slugged .606 for the year. She threw out six trying to steal as teams attempted just 37 steals for the year.

“Kelly (Parsons), caught every one of our 49 games this year,” Stone said.  “Being honored as the conference Freshmen of the Year says a lot about her toughness.  Without a doubt, these kids made my first season here as the head coach of the Yellowjackets one of the most memorable in my career.”
