CHANDLER, Ariz. – Four, first-inning runs set the tone as Montana State Billings dropped a 12-7 decision to Mayville State Wednesday afternoon. With the loss, the Yellowjackets fall to 3-5 on the year, while Mayville State improves to 4-5.

The Comets started the game batting around, scoring four runs on five singles to take a 4-0 lead. Yellowjacket hurler struggled in the opening inning, walking two and striking out one. Mayville State had four consecutive singles in the inning.

Mayville State added another run in the fourth inning on a triple by Erik Scott to put the Comets up 5-0. Two Jacket errors in the sixth led to one more run for the Comets for a 6-0 lead. In the seventh, Mayville added two more runs in the seventh for an 8-0 lead.

The Yellowjackets got on the board in the eighth inning hitting back-to-back singles as Mike Kakalecik drove in Seth Moir for an 8-1 score. The Comets added for more runs in the ninth inning for a 12-1 lead.

MSUB would not go down quietly as it rallied for six runs in the bottom of the ninth inning on six hits as the team batted around. Levi Johnson had a two run single highlighting the inning. It would not be enough as the Jackets fall 12-7.

Catcher Joe Via went 3 for 3 on the day for the Yellowjackets as he was the only player with multiple hits. Having only three hits as a team heading into the eighth inning, the Jackets found some offense and tallied seven runs and eight hits in the final two innings.

Brian Strom (0-1) takes the loss in six innings of work. He allowed nine hits, six runs – five earned, three walks and had five strikeouts. Comet starter Austin Baukol had a gem of an outing, going six strong innings allowing three hits, three walks and six strikeouts. However, his bullpen couldn’t keep the shutout intact.

The Yellowjackets look to rebound tomorrow with a doubleheader against Madonna University beginning at 9:30 a.m. at Snedigar Field.
