MSUB Volleyball Slides Three Spots in NCAA Poll (11/1/06)

BILLINGS, MT – Since the last poll released, the Montana State-Billings volleyball team has won every match to no avail as the Lady Jackets continued its downward slide from No. 7 to No. 10 in this week’s NCAA Southwest Region volleyball poll.  The Lady Jackets finished the regular season 23-4 and a perfect 10-0 in Heartland Conference play.

The next rankings released by the NCAA will be November 5 when the Volleyball Committee decides the top eight qualifiers for a berth to the NCAA Tournament.  The Jackets best hopes for a trip to the Big Dance will come from winning the Heartland Conference Tournament hosted by MSU Billings November 3 and 4.  Each conference tournament champion receives an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.  The Yellowjackets had already clinched the No. 1 seed in the conference and closed its regular season last week sweeping St. Mary’s University in three-game matches.

West Texas A&M (28-3) remains in the drivers seat followed by Western New Mexico (25-5) who moved up two spots from No. 4 to No. 2.  Mesa State (15-13) made the biggest jump climbing all the way from the No. 9 position to No. 3.  They are followed by Abilene Christian (18-9), Nebraska-Kearney (26-6), Metro State (16-9), Fort Lewis (20-8), Regis (16-12), UC-Colorado Springs (14-13), and MSUB (23-4).

The Yellowjackets host Dallas Baptist (17-14, 7-2), St. Mary’s (18-15, 5-5), and St. Edward’s (7-23, 5-5) November 3 and 4 for the 2006 Heartland Conference Championship.  No. 2 seed Dallas Baptist plays the No. 3 seed St. Mary’s Friday at 3:00 p.m. St. Edward’s who is seeded fourth will meet the No. 1 seed Yellowjackets in the late game starting at 6:00 p.m. on November 3.  The championship match is set for November 4 at 7:00 p.m.
