Yellowjacket Golf Twelfth After Round One (3/26/07)

BAKERSFIELD, CA- The Montana State-Billings men’s golf team stands twelfth out of a 12-team field following the first 18-holes of play at the Elco, Inc. Invitational hosted by Cal State-Bakersfield.

The top four schools in the team competition are shooting under par, while the remainder of the field is at least eight-over.  Leading the way is Cal State-San Bernardino with a first round six-under 282.  Second place is shared by Point Loma Nazarene and UCLA with a four-under 284.  Rounding out the leader board is host team Cal State-Bakersfield who carded a first round three-under 285.  The Yellowjackets shot a combined 323 for a 35-over first round.

Leading the charge in the individual competition is Sam Cyr from Point Loma.  Cyr carded a four-under 68 following the first 18-holes of play.  Cal State-Bakersfield’s Mike Yates is second shooting a three-under par 69.  There is a five-way tie for third between Dane Bagnell, Charlie Harris, Jason Kang, Chris Kwon, and Gene Webster, all of which shot a two-under 70 for the day.  The Yellowjackets are led by Zach Abels (Twin Falls, ID) who is in a seven-way tie for thirty-sixth with a round one six-over 76.

In a field where all 60 golfers are within 19-strokes of each other, the competition could be stiff for the top spots following Tuesday’s final round of 18-holes.
