Jackets Slip One Spot at Lady Buffalo Invite (4/4/06)

AMARILLO, TX – Under windy conditions, the Montana State-Billings women’s golf team slipped one spot to ninth in the team competition shooting a 36-hole combined 759 at the Lady Buffalo Invitational held in Amarillo, Texas April 3 and 4.

Western New Mexico continued to dominate the team competition to take top honors with rounds of 311 and 320 for a combined 631.  Central Oklahoma shaved eight-strokes off their first round total to hold the second spot with a 648 (328, 320).  Tarleton State rounded out the third spot carding rounds of 336 and 330 for a 666.  The host team West Texas A&M shot a 332 and 341 (673) which was good enough for fourth. 

It came down to a play-off to determine the winner of the Invite.  Western New Mexico’s Katharine Dorris and Central Oklahoma’s Ashley Kelley played an extra hole to determine the champion.  Kelley prevailed with both golfers carding a two-round total 152.  Third place belonged to Emily Kirk, also of Central Oklahoma.  Kirk shot rounds of 76 and 79 for a 155.  The Lady Jackets were paced by Halley Montalban (So., Billings, MT) who shot to 23rd place.  Montalban had rounds of 86 and 89 for a combined 175.  No golfer at the invite was able to shoot better than two-over par at the par-72 Tascosa Country Club golf course.

The Lady Jackets head to Chico, California April 10-11 to compete in their final invitational leading up to the Heartland Conference Championships that will be hosted by Oklahoma Panhandle State in Amarillo, Texas April 17 and 18.
