Mustangs Sweep Lady Jackets to Split Series (9/24/05)
Box Score

BILLINGS, MT – Western New Mexico swept the Montana State-Billings volleyball team Saturday night to earn a two-match Heartland Conference split.  The Mustangs’ Stephanie Higgins dominated the match, pounding out 30 kills on a blistering .500 attack percentage.  Western won 32-30, 30-28, 30-27.

The Mustangs improved to 13-4 overall and 3-1 in the Heartland Conference.  MSU Billings fell to 12-4, 2-2.  The Yellowjackets stopped Western’s 11-match winning streak with a 3-2 win on Friday night.

Higgins, a transfer from Ohio State, had a big match Friday with 27 kills.  She was nearly unstoppable Saturday needing just 48 attack attempts to reach the 30-kill mark.  Last week’s Heartland Conference hitter of the week also picked up seven digs.

The Mustangs hit .357 as a team with 61 kills and just 16 errors.  They didn’t have a game with a team attack percentage below .318.  Janiel McNeill was the only other Mustang with double digit kills with 13.  Denise Lunt came off the bench to record 10 digs.  Setter Courtney Heiser handed out a match-high 51 assists after recording 59 on Friday.

The Yellowjackets were led by 14 kills apiece from Jessica Bratton (Jr., Casper, WY) and Alicia Cazemier (So., Vauxhall, Alberta).  Cazemier had just three attack errors on 24 attempts for a .458 attack percentage.  She also posted four blocks for a total of 17 for the weekend.

Ali Watson (Jr., Calgary, Alberta) added a double-double of 11 kills and 14 digs.  She also led all players with three service aces.  Natalie Bills (Jr., Provo, UT) handed out 47 assists and had two service aces.  Cazemier and Nicole Kruse (So., Huntley, MT) also had a pair of aces each.  Kruse added eight digs.  Alexis Sandru (Jr., Twin Bridges, MT) finished with eight kills and seven digs.  Jessica Lechner (Fr., Huntley, MT) had five kills on eight attempts.

MSU Billings will play a non-conference match at Rocky Mountain College on September 27 before returning to Heartland Conference play.  After the match at Rocky, the Jackets will make a four-match road trip with two matches each at Dallas Baptist and Oklahoma Panhandle.
