Larson Notches Top Ten Finish (4/11/06)

TURLOCK, CA – Under wet, windy conditions the Montana State-Billings men’s golf team wrapped up the 33rd annual George Buzzini Invitational with a sixteenth place team finish.  The Jackets played three rounds at the par 72 Turlock Golf and Country Club in Turlock, California April 10 and 11.

The host team CSU-Stanislaus glided to a 12-stroke win over second place CSU-Bakersfield firing rounds of 287, 293 and 298 for a combined 878.  Bakersfield shot a 292 and 298 on day one and struggled in round three (306) for an 896.  There was a tie for the third spot between CSU-Monterey Bay and CSU-San Bernardino with a 905.  The Jackets carded a 323, 306, and 317 to claim sixteenth (946).

Winning the individual competition was D.J. Fernando of CSU-Bakersfield.  Fernando shot even over the three rounds carding a 70, 71, and 75 for a 216.  Ryan Thornberry and Matt Hollinsead both of the host team Warriors tied for second and were just one-stroke off the pace with a 217.  Leading the Yellowjackets and the only golfer to shoot under par in round three was Nicholas Larson (So., Riverton, WY).  Larson improved in each round (77, 74, 70) to card a five-over 221 for the invite, tying him for eighth. 

The Jackets will compete at the 2006 Heartland Conference Championships April 17 and 18.  The championships will be played in Amarillo, Texas and Oklahoma Panhandle State will host.
