Lady Jacket “D” Dominates in Win at Seattle (Dec. 1, 2004)
Box Score

BILLINGS, MT – A night after their first loss of the season, the Montana State-Billings women’s basketball team bounced back with a 57-36 win at Seattle University on Wednesday.  The Yellowjackets allowed only 11 points in the second half to improve to 4-1 on the season.  The Redhawks had their three-game home winning streak snapped to fall to 3-3.

“It was a good win for us,” said Yellowjacket head coach Kevin Woodin.  “We really played well throughout the game, but especially in the second half.  We controlled the boards and we made a couple adjustments in our zone defense.  We were able to play a complete half of basketball and had a nice balance of inside and outside scoring.  We went deeper into our bench, and they delivered well for us.  I think that will pay dividends as the season progresses.  I was really happy how we responded after our first loss.”

Seattle took an early 11-7 lead seven and a half minutes into the game.  The Yellowjackets tied the game on back-to-back baskets from Kayla Frize (Jr., Miles City, MT).  After the teams traded leads over a span of four minutes, Tanya Petersen’s (Jr., Billings, MT) layup with 6:03 left in the first half gave MSU Billings a 19-17 lead which it never relinquished.  The Jackets led by as many as eight before taking a 29-25 lead into halftime.

The second half started with a three and a half minutes scoreless streak that Seattle broke with a Kristen Connolly jumper.  The Yellowjackets’ next six baskets came on layups from Petersen, Robyn Milne (Sr., Richey, MT) and Michelle Lieber (So., Gillette, WY).  Shannon Harvey’s (So., Billings, MT) 3-pointer with 8:39 remaining gave MSUB a 46-34 lead.  The Yellowjacket defense clamped down, allowing only two points the rest of the way.

Seattle’s 36 points were their lowest point total since the 2000-2001 season when the Yellowjackets held them to 31.  Their 11 points in the second half Wednesday was the fewest scored by the Redhawks in a half since that same game when the Jackets held them to five in the first half.

Three Yellowjackets scored in double figures, led by Petersen’s 12.  She also handed out a game-high six assists.  Lieber had a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.  She was 5-of-6 from the field.  Milne finished with nine points, three blocks and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Jenny Langford (Jr., Reedpoint, MT) scored 11 points and handed out four assists.  She was 4-of-9 from the field and 3-of-4 from behind the arc.  Frize scored six points on 3-of-5 shooting, and Harvey added five points.

Seattle was led by eight points apiece from Ashley Payne and Chantell Burch.  Burch also had seven rebounds.  Amanda Kerr added six points and five rebounds.

The Yellowjackets next play at the Humboldt State tournament in Arcata, CA on December 10 and 11.  MSUB will face Chico State the first night and Southern Oregon the second night.  They return home December 17 and 18 to host Humboldt State for two games.
