MSUB’s Wiley Earns Academic Honor (Feb. 20, 2005)

BILLINGS, MT – Montana State-Billings sophomore Jonathan Wiley has been named to the “ESPN The Magazine” 2005 College Division Academic All-District VII Men’s Basketball First Team by CoSIDA.  Wiley, a 6’7” guard from Westlake Village, CA, majors in Finance and has a 3.94 cumulative grade point average.

By being named one of the five first team members for District VII, Wiley advances to the national ballot for the “ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Team.”  He is the fourth Montana State-Billings student-athlete to reach the national balloting in the last two years.  Last year men’s basketball player Jerett Skrifvars was named to the Academic All-America First Team.  This fall women’s soccer player Margot Merrill-Johnson was named to the ESPN Academic All-America First Team.  Earlier this week, women’s basketball player Robyn Milne was named to the District VII First team.

The College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-America program divides the country into eight districts.  Sports Information Directors from each of the eight districts select their Academic All-District teams with student-athletes from the eight first teams advancing to national balloting for Academic All-America honors.  Schools from Montana are part of District VII, which also includes Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Alberta and Saskatchewan.  Nominees for the District VII College Division can come from any Division II, Division III, or NAIA school in any of those states.

In addition to academic success, on court performance is considered in the Academic All-America voting.  Wiley has averaged 7.4 points and 4.6 rebounds a game for the Yellowjackets this year.  He currently ranks fourth in the Pacific West Conference for free throw percentage at 83.8 percent.  He is also seventh for assists per game (3.43), seventh for steals per game (1.33), sixth for blocked shots per game (0.67), and sixth for assist/turnover ratio (1.53).  In less than two seasons, Wiley has already climbed to ninth in school history with 31 career blocked shots.
