Western New Mexico Sweeps Lady Jackets (Nov. 13, 2003)
Box Score

BILLINGS, MT – Western New Mexico won its ninth-straight volleyball match Thursday night with a 3-0 sweep of MSU Billings at Alterowitz Gymnasium.  Three Mustangs finished with double-digit kills in the 30-27, 30-25, 30-20 win.  Western New Mexico improved to 17-13 overall and 4-6 in the PacWest while the Yellowjackets dropped to 6-19, 2-8.

Western New Mexico’s Kim Tano led all players with 15 kills on a .237 hitting percentage.  She also added 13 digs.  Laree Green and Suzanne Bruchhauser also had double-figure kills with 11 and 10 respectively.

"They just made us look slow tonight," said Yellowjacket coach Pa'ulasi Matavao.  "We fought hard in the first game, but made a crucial mistake late in the game and things went downhill from there.  The way Western New Mexico is playing right now, we had to play good defense.  They dug more balls than we did when we needed to be the better defensive team.  It's very surprising because we had a great week of practice."

The Yellowjackets hit just .044 as a team with only six more kills than errors.  The team’s leading hitter, Olivia Munro (Jr., Toronto, Ontario), was held in check, recording just eight kills on 50 attempts as WNMU finished with 15 more digs than the Yellowjackets in the match.  Katrina Dahlgren (Sr., Missoula, MT), Cortney Metzler (Jr., Roundup, MT) and Jessica Bratton (Fr., Casper, WY) each tallied seven kills.

Dahlgren also had eight total blocks to take over the PacWest Conference lead in blocks per game at 1.16.  She entered the match sitting in fourth in the conference, 0.04 bpg behind Western New Mexico’s Laree Green, who led the conference.  Green had five total blocks in the match to improve her per game average to 1.15, but still dropped to second in the PacWest.

MSU Billings will wrap-up its season Friday night at 7:00 p.m. in a non-conference meeting with Western New Mexico.  Friday will also be Senior Night for Dahlgren, Sandy Beal (Sr., Troy, MT) and Brittany Uffelman (Sr., Thermopolis, WY).
