Yellowjacket Softball Falls Twice at Hawaii-Hilo (Feb. 12, 2004)
Box Score 1
Box Score 2

HILO, HI – Montana State-Billings dropped both games of a double-header to Hawaii-Hilo for the second straight day Thursday, losing 4-3 and 3-0.  The losses drop the Yellowjackets to 4-6 overall and 0-4 in the PacWest.  The Vulcans improved to 6-3, 4-0.  MSU Billings travels to Honolulu for conference double-headers on Saturday and Sunday at Chaminade.

After falling behind 3-0 in game one, the Yellowjackets rallied with three runs in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game.  All three runs came from the bottom half of the order, with the 6, 7 and 9 batters all scoring.  Christy Wankel started the inning with a single to right field.  Anna Henderson followed with an infield single, advancing Wankel to second.  Following an Aysha Blatter strikeout, Cami Rainey doubled to left, plating Wankel and moving Henderson to third.  A single from Joey Ehnes scored both Henderson and Rainey to tie the game.  Stephanie Cochrun hit into a 4-3 double play to end the inning.

Jordan Waverek pitched the first 4 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits.  None of the runs were earned as the Jackets committed three errors in the game.  Ehnes entered in relief of Waverek in the fifth inning, holding the Vulcans scoreless for the next three innings and sending the game into extra innings.

UH-Hilo finally manufactured the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.  After loading the bases on a fielder’s choice and two singles, the Vulcans’ Laura Kimborowicz singled to shortstop to score Zoie Sevilla for the game winner.

Ehnes was 2-for-4 with two RBI in the game.  Kimborowicz was 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Vulcans.  Ehnes took the loss despite allowing one run on five hits with four strikeouts.  Sarah Steele pitched nine innings for the victory.

The Yellowjackets were held to just three hits in game two by the Vulcans’ Tara Martinez.  Anna Henderson was 2-for-3 for the Jackets.  Ehnes went the distance on the mound, allowing eight hits and three earned runs while striking out five.  UH-Hilo scored once in the first and twice in the fourth behind balanced team hitting.  The Vulcans’ eight hits came from eight different batters.  Ehnes fell to 3-3 on the year with Thursday’s losses.
