Game #1 Box Score
Game #2 Box Score

SILVER CITY, NM – The Montana State-Billings softball team finished a 10-day, 17-game spring break road swing by dropping a doubleheader to defending PacWest champion Western New Mexico on Saturday.  The Yellowjackets lost 7-2 and 10-9 in 10 innings to fall to 9-22 overall and 0-12 in the PacWest.  Western New Mexico improved to 16-6 overall and remained unbeaten in conference play at 4-0.

The Yellowjackets will play their home opener on March 19 at the fourth annual Yellowjacket Invitational.  Sixteen of the Jackets’ final 22 games will be at Cenex Stadium in Billings, including PacWest Conference games against Hawaii Pacific and BYU-Hawaii in April.

The Mustangs took a 7-0 lead through four innings of game one and cruised to the win.  Angela Slaugh pitched the complete game for the victory.  The Jackets’ Joey Ehnes tossed four innings in the loss, giving up five hits and seven runs while striking out five.  She dropped to 7-12 for the season.  Stephanie Cochrun pitched the final two innings, allowing two hits and striking out two.

Ehnes was 1-for-3 at the plate with a double.  Freshman Anna Henderson went 2-for-4, Christy Wankel was 2-for-3, and Cami Rainey was 1-for-4.  Rainey had a two-RBI single in the fifth inning.

The Yellowjackets took early control of game two, scoring in each of the first three innings to build an 8-0 lead.  The Mustangs rallied with six runs in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to two.  After MSUB added a run in the sixth, the Mustangs answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth and two more in the seventh to force extra innings.  The Yellowjackets were just one out away from a 9-7 win before giving up two runs with two down in the seventh.

Rainey was 2-for-5 in the game with a 3-run home run.  She also scored two runs.  Ehnes, Sara Hanley and Theresa Campbell were each 2-for-5.  Megan McCrae was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.  Wankel was 3-for-3 and reached base four times, scoring twice.

McCrae pitched the first seven innings, allowing 11 hits and nine runs.  Ehnes pitched the final 2 1/3 innings, giving up one hit and one run while striking out three.  Using international tiebreaking rules, the Mustangs’ Meredith Drahota started the tenth inning on second base.  After stealing third, she scored on a sacrifice fly by Jessica Garcia.  Slaugh recorded the win after relieving Megan Gross in the third inning.
