Yellowjacket Volleyball Team Sweeps Silverswords (October 22, 2002)

BILLINGS, MT – A career night for junior Kari Gerretsen led the MSU Billings ""Yellowjackets to a 3-0 sweep of Chaminade Tuesday night.  After being swept by the Pacific Region’s No. 5 ranked team on Monday, MSUB (7-13, 2-5) turned the tables behind Gerretsen’s 20 kills.

Chaminade (14-4, 6-2) entered the weekend and ranked 5th in the Pacific Region poll.  After the Silverswords outplayed the Jackets in every facet on Monday, MSUB stepped on the court like a team with something to prove on Tuesday, winning 30-26, 30-20, 34-32.  The Yellowjackets captured the momentum early with solid defense.  Cortney Metzler and Sandy Beal each finished the match with six block assists.

Gerretsen tallied her 20 kills in 51 attempts with a .255 hitting percentage.  Her previous career-best was 18 against Hawaii-Hilo on September 17.  She had struggled in the past two matches, but was on target for most of Tuesday’s match.  Gerretsen also added 13 digs to notch a double-double.

Freshman Ashley Jones recorded double-digit kills for the third straight match with her double-double performance of 10 kills and 14 digs.  Krissy Janney handed out 44 assists and libero Mandi Paulson finished with 18 digs.

The Silverswords made a run in game three, hitting .259, but MSUB held on to the momentum.  The Yellowjackets had four match points before finally closing out the third game.

Chaminade was paced by PacWest Player of the Week Kahala Kabalis, who had 17 kills and eight digs.  Valasi Sepulona recorded a match-high 20 digs and eight kills.  Setter Janeen Waialae notched 37 assists.

MSU Billings next plays at Rocky Mountain College on October 29 before traveling to Western New Mexico for matches on November 1 and 2.
